ROSA PARK’S LEAD TO FAME: MONTGOMERY BUS

BOYCOTTOn December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks was asked to give up her seat for a white passenger to sit down because the white section of the bus was full.Parks refused to give up her seat because she was in the colored section of the bus.Parks was arrested by two police officers because she violated segregation laws.Blacks began to boycott the Montgomery bus system after her arrest.

A CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER

In the mid-1960’s Rosa Parks traveled nationally as a civil rights activist with other activists such as Martin Luther King, Malcom X and John Conyers and participated in the Selma march. Parks went to schools, hospitals, and community gatherings to protest welfare, job discrimination, education, and housing.Parks has many streets, memorials, and a few statues in her remembrance and is known as one of the first women to spark the civil rights movement.
