Paul A. Steck: Ophelia 1895Ophelias death has been praised as one of the most poetically written death scenes in literature.Ophelia is a captivating character: she provides inspiration to pre-Raphaelites and other artists. Hamlets fiance, she turns mad when her father, Polonius, is killed by Hamlet. Shew drowns in solitude, in sorrow, and madness
Sir John Everett Millais : "Ophelia" 1851 "Ophelia": John Everett MillaisMillais's iconic painting "Ophelia" shows the scene in which Ophelia, driven mad by Hamlets taunts, falls into a brook and ultimately drowns. "Ophelia" still remains one of the most popular paintings in the Tate collection, and the story of its creation has captured the imagination as much as the final painting beauty.
The model for "Ophelia" was Elizabeth Siddall, who featured in several Pre-Raphaelite paintings and became Dante Gabriel Rossetti muse and wife. Millaiss treatment of the model for the painting has become infamous, as he forced the young Elizabeth Siddal to lie fully clothed in a tub of cold water while he completed his work.
Lopold Burthe (1823 1860) "And I: of ladies most deject and wretched:That suck'd the honey of his music vows:Now see that noble and most sovereign reason:Like sweet bells jangled out of tune and harsh:That unmatch'd form and feature of blown youthBlasted with ecstasy. O: woe is meT'have seen what I have seen: see what I see.

Hbert's portrait of Ophelia is charged with a latent sexuality. The dark: hollow eyes stare defiantly at the viewer and suggest a pain and betrayal beyond her ability to cope20
