DENIM Denim is a key element within indie fashion, acting as the staple material for many outfits. Denim is often used for the lower section of an outfit, in the style of mom and boyfriend jeans/shorts with the tops tucked in and sometimes with big statement belts to help the jeans cinch in at the waist. Often for jeans the denim is pale shades of blue and faded denim; rips are also very popular within the jeans/shorts, as are fraying and tears. The jeans come to just above the ankles, sometimes by being rolled/turned up at the bottom and work well with plain black and white shoes, such as “old school” style Adidas, Converse and Doc Martins. Popular with the denim jeans is the use of brightly coloured and patterned socks. Denim is used widely for jackets as well within the indie style and these too are frayed and normally decorated with embossed badges and designs. Dungarees are another use of denim within the indie fashion.

OVERSIZED TOPS Oversized tops are also an key element to indie fashion as they work well with the style of jeans. Often these tops are block colours such as blue, white, yellow and shades of pink, they can be both short and long sleeves, with short sleeves more popular where the sleeves will often be rolled up. This style of tops can be worn by both genders and are often tucked into jeans. Sometimes the tops can have small quirky motifs often in the upper corners of the tops or have larger motifs on both the back and front of the top. Band shirts of indie/indie pop bands are also very popular within this styling of being oversized. If the tops are not plain they will often carry a quirky design and pattern, which is particularly popular for jumpers.

SHOES The main style of shoes for an indie/indie pop look is mostly anything more old school and vintage looking. Black and white are key staple colours for shoes however other designs can included floral patterns and pops of colour. Converse and Vans are a popular choice due to the authentic look they provide with; conversed based shoes are a key element of the indie look. Doc Martins and vintage style Nikes, Adidas and Puma are also very popular. Boat shoes and moccasins are also a indie look that are preferred in summer. Any type or brand of shoe is also often paired with quirky and unique socks.

MAKEUP AND HAIR Indie makeup is dewy and fresh, with the use of highlighters and blushers to create the look. Often the eyeshadow will be the brightest area on the face, and is sometimes glittery with sharp and clean winger eyeliner. Pinks, gold’s, purples and lighter shades of red are used for this. Lips can also provide the colour however eyeshadow is used to do this more. Indie hair is often messier, in buns or space buns, with lose sections to frame the face. Often the hair is brightly coloured but this is not always the case with natural colours working just as well. French plaits and fringes are also popular among hairstyles. Waves and natural imperfections in hair are another element of the indie style.

SETTINGThe location and setting also plays a part for indie styles. This can be a massive range as people are interested in the indie style all over the world; there are some common themes such as the feeling of being relaxed and calm, includes light in some sort of way and can be either nature or a city. Nature and travelling are also often linked into these places to create a “chill” feel. The pictures to the right create this feeling and the simplicity of the indie style.
