How have I used, developed or challenged the language of

music videos? Mise en scene

The locations featured In my music video;

• Locking up the house & inside the house

• Biking scenes around village roads

• Performance gigs ( the waterfront & open)

• Memory scene locations ( wheel, tram, BBQ outside, arcade, beach, Greece, )

• Drummer practising at home

Meanings for shooting locking up the house and inside the house shots.I chose to use a house as the first shot of the character to build a sense of character, locking up his house and going out. This helped to set the scene that he was the narrator of the story/video.

Meanings for shooting biking shots, The character biking was to create a sense of motion and movement in the video, almost to act as a narrative that guided the video/story along. The shots established a sense of traveling by showing the locations that drummer is biking. This also relates to the memory scenes presented, which are linked to the theme of travelling.

Locations, why I used them and what meanings do they have

I wanted to include footage of the band/ drummer playing live to create an idealised interpretation of a young musical life. How playing live gigs and having your own audience is fun. The gig locations of the waterfront and open really helped and worked well with this setting because of the young people who were there supporting the band, these silhouettes were featured in my music video. The gigs also allowed to form a connection of the drummer to the band, making his role understandable.

Meanings of shooting memory scene locations

When shooting the locations for the memory scene it was important that these locations were upbeat, happy places that youth would relate to and idealised. Therefore I choose to include typical summer activity's such as the beach, fairground's, arcades and BBQ’s, this also helped to create my lost summer, nostalgic style.

Meaning for shooting drummer practising locations

I chose to feature the drummer practising in his own home environment, this was to show his the enthusiasm to music, but also to guide the narrative to a personal interruption of the drummer. The location allowed me to film up close and look at the different parts of the drum kit, this also helped me when trying to film pieces to match the beat of the song.

lighting and colours.

The use of cinematic photography was important to achieve In my music video because of how I wanted the video to be idealised by youth. The filter of an orange colour pallet was used to form a nostalgic feel and style to the video. In comparison to the bright coloured lighting and locations used, I chose to work around a bright colour pallet so that the locations and environment would look fun and idealised by the audience, a dull dark colour pallet would do the opposite effect.

I took inspiration from the film “ Submarine, 2010” Which uses a nostalgic style effect to parts of the film. The use of a super 8 camera effect creates this nostalgic lost summers feel to the videos. I took inspiration from the filters and applied them to my own filter that I created using adobe Photoshop.

Camera work

The initial starting shoot of the drummer doing up his shoe laces was used to create a sense of introduction to the character, to set him as the narrator of the video. The close up on the Doc Martin shoes and the shot taken above was to highlight the indie style, Doc martens are a key fashion statement which represent the theme of “indie”. I took influence from a scene captured in “this is England” which highlights how doc martins were scene as a fashion statement by the youth in the 1980’s, this concept that fashion is used to from a lifestyle links to the theorist Dick Hedbrige who aurged that “ young people construct their identity through fashion and musical influence. The shot of the character locking up was so that the audience could gain a full perspective on his outfit, highlighting the style of youth presented. It was also to capture the drum sticks in the bag, this was to add personality and almost a sense of emagma to the audience.

When shooting the drummer practising I used a mix of camera angles such as a birds eye view shots, zoomed in shots of the drums, and front views to show the drummer playing and the set up. I wanted the audience to feel close to the drummer to gain a sense of his personality, the close up tight shots and birds eye view shots make the audience feel close to the drummer but also to show that the drummer is the focus point and the narrator of the video. The close ups on the drum kit shows the drummer personality as well as his personal life because of the teenage bedroom style environment.

I used the cycling shots and scenes to guide the story along to add a sense of motion/ movement to the video. Similarly to the drumming shots I used a range of camera angles, this was to create a sense of movement from different angles, but also for the audience to feel close to the character by making him the focus point of the video. The close ups make the audience position themselves with the drummer. The chose the prop of the bike for the motion scene to add speed to the video, rather than walking which would be to a slower pace. Biking also allows the characters costume to be shown.

When filming the band playing at gigs I used front on/ straight ahead shoots this was so the audience would almost feel like the audience at the gig, watching them play. I didn’t include close up shots of the band members or instruments as the location and playing live music was the vibe and atmosphere was key to what I wanted to be presented. I wanted performing live to be idealised, therefore closer shots would have been position the audience with certain instruments/ members rather than the atmospheres presented.

Similar to the gig performance shots, I focused on positing the camera straight on/ front on shots, this was so the audience would be able to watch and see the different locations presented. This was so the audience would idealised the theme of youth, going out and the travel presented. This was a main theme and message that I wanted to present in my music video.
