The Vision Macon as a city is highly diverse and youthful. Downtown as a hub, should reflect this image. Our community, as a whole, while being diverse and youthful is also driven by a strong urban and modern spirit. This being said we need to embrace art that caters to the community collectively while still bringing the national attention that Macon deserves.

The Alleyways

Highly trafficked alleys such as between the Hummingbird and LemonGrass

These alleys are dangerous and not well lit at night

Art walls in these alleyways would be well lit and attract more walkers, providing a safe area to traverse when spending time downtown.

Blighted Buildings and Facades

Buildings and facades that are otherwise vacant or in disrepair could be used as Mural space for nationally/internationally known artists who would be commissioned by the program to brighten and revitalize the look of downtown.

Vacant retail spaces and storefronts could be used by artists to come up with creative ways to gain the space attention with the intentions on getting it rented.

Macon is full of talented artists. We are a culture rich in history as well as ability to create history. We have fallen to the wayside as competitors in growth as a city. We need to get back to our roots in the arts. We need to embrace our strengths and build on them. We need to teach and mold our youth because they are our future. The Arts is and always will be a great catalyst for this.

Giving our artists a place to showcase what they can do and providing an avenue for our youth to grow artistically and in a positive light can only better our chances at progression.

Having beautiful murals and designated alleyways to showcase the talent that our community breeds can only bring in and foster a sense of beauty to the visiting public. We should continue to embrace tourism, and what better way then with our artistically talented community.

Through the support of the community and the various organizations that serve to create a sense of place and foster development in our city, we can certainly make this happen.

The Venice Art Walls Program is well laid out and has been successfully executed for years and should certainly serve as a model for us to follow. Of course we will tweak it and make it ours. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. The Living Walls program in Atlanta can also serve a similar purpose.
