Massachusetts officials recently announced the development of the Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum in the northwest part of the state. The innovative venue will be created within an old North Adams train depot.

The museum will encompass 32,400 square feet and feature O-scale model locomotives, which are exactly 1/48th the size of US trains.

Architecture Museum The model trains will wind around scaled-down models of

contemporary architecture by the likes of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid. In order to house the lengthy tracks, a new entrance will be constructed for the historic brick building.

This unique museum is designed by Gluckman Tang, a New York studio with ties to major projects such as the Guggenheim expansion in Bilbao, Spain. It promises to be a major draw both for architectural and model train enthusiasts in the region. In addition to the model railroad facility, Gluckman Tang has planned the Global Contemporary Art Museum at the nearby decommissioned Harriman-West airport.
