Raster Graphics

• Give a definition of Raster GraphicsRaster graphics are composed of pixels. A raster graphic, such as a gif or jpeg, is an array of pixels of various colours, which together form an image.

Vector Graphics

• Give a definition of Vector GraphicsVector graphics are comprised of paths, which are defined by a start and end point, along with other points, curves, and angles along the way. A path can be a line, a square, a triangle, or a curvy shape.

Raster Graphics

JPEGStands For Joint Photographic Experts Group

Used For/Example JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPEG is used to make huge image files into small file size. It compresses the files by 90%, and cuts the file size to 1/10th of the original

Advantage They are compressed and take up much less room than a TIFF, BMP, or RAW. Most items that allow saving under a JPEG also allow how much you compress. A rather large photo file can be compressed into a rather small package for e-mail sending or just space saving

Disadvantage When an image is converted to JPEG, some of the information in the image is lost. When JPEG images are continually loading and saving the image can lose quality.

TIFFStands For Tagged Image File Format

Used For/Example TIFF file using lossless compression may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality. TIFF files are used mainly when someone wants to keep the image quality without compressing the file down

Advantage One of the major advantages of TIFF files is that they can be edited with most popular image editing software on the market. All popular operating systems have built-in TIFF

Disadvantage Since compression is not used by default on TIFF files, the file size is generally quite big. This is a big disadvantage of TIFF files. Uncompressed TIFF images can take up a lot more space than a JPEG.

GIFStands For Graphics Interchange Format

Used For/Example GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format GIFs are a way to share animated graphics online. They are still popular as a low file size alternative

Advantage GIFS have relatively small file sizes this means that they can be used easily online as they can load quicker and still have a good quality.

Disadvantage GIFS only have a maximum colour palette of 256 colours so therefore can sometimes look of a poorer quality than other types of file or image. This can lead to the images having more ‘blocky’ colours and also looking slightly pixelated.

BMPStands For Bitmap Image File

Used For/Example BMP file format, also known as bitmap all web browsers can read it, all graphic software can read it, all word processors - even quite old ones- can display it, and lot of other application can use it which might have problems with other file formats

Advantage BMPS are the most accurate way to display colour in photographs. No dithering, artefacts or down sampling is done unless you do it yourself.

Disadvantage Bitmap images expanded to a larger size look blocky and computer-like, and if you don't follow the image's aspect ratio (4:1 for normal, 16:9 or 23:7 for widescreen) you could distort the image

Vector Graphics

PSDStands For Photoshop Document

Used For/Example PSD file is a layered image file used in Adobe Photoshop. PSD, which stands for Photoshop Document, is the default format that Photoshop uses for saving data.

Advantage The layers are preserved when a file is saved using the PSD file formatyou can go back, at anytime, to make changes to the layers.

Disadvantage PSDS are only used to save Photoshop files. Web browsers cannot read PSD file format

AIStands For Adobe Illustrator

Used For/Example AI is a proprietary file format developed by Adobe Systems for representing single-page vector-based drawings in either the EPS or PDF formats

Advantage Wider compatibility for a native vector format, most advanced vector format availableAI are compatible with other Adobe programmes such as Photoshop and can be transferred

Disadvantage Newer versions may have compatibility issues, not a standard file format

You need the correct software to actually view it

FLAStands For Flash File

Used For/Example An FLA file is an Adobe Flash editable movie or animation.

Advantage FLA files a good for creating movie or GIFS They are good for making high quality files without a large save file.FLA can also use sound and video together

Disadvantage Web browsers cannot read FLA file formatsYou may not be able to view FLA files with a slow internet connection

WMFStands For Windows Metafile Format

Used For/Example WMF stands for Windows Metafile Format. Metafile means that this file contains information that describes or specifies another file.

Advantage WMV continues to have advantages over many of the other video formats. WMV files tend to be quite small considering the amount of video information they preserve.

Disadvantage The major disadvantage of WMV is its compatibility with non-Windows platforms. It is difficult to find Apple or Linux players that are capable of playing WMV files. For this reason, WMV has not become a standard Web format, despite its small size.

File Format Capture and Optimising

CompressionDefinition Compression is when a file is reduced to

save disk space for easier and faster transmission over a network or the Internet.

Advantage Compressing files allows more space on your computer or hard driveCompression makes files smaller allowing more saves Compression has faster file transfer

Disadvantage Slower access of compressed data it consumes more resources when accessing the compressed data. Compression is lossy with bitmap images and is quite time consuming

Image CaptureMethod Scanner

How is it used for image capture of graphics

The Scanner allows you to scan the image to make a copy or save it to the computer

Method CameraHow is it used for image capture of

graphicsThe camera is used to capture the image itself

Method Graphics TabletHow is it used for image capture of

graphicsA Tablet allows you to draw out or sketch an image

OptimisingWhy would you optimise? You would use optimise to make an image

clearer to ensure easy viewing on the web.Optimising takes up less storage and is easily loaded on the internet

How can you optimise? You can optimise an image by changing the size of it in Photoshop. You can also reduce the amount of colours that are within the image. Reducing the amount of pixels in a image will with the size of the image

Advantage to optimising Non optimized images have larger file sizes which mean optimized images are faster to load online. You can also send them quicker to

Disadvantage to optimising The larger the size of a file the longer the image will take to download. Optimizing is more time consuming to do

Storage

File SizeWhat could affect a Working Scale (Photoshop) document file size?

You could use 8-bit which will use less colours making less file size where as if you use 16-bit you are creating more colours to save making the file bigger

How could you reduce the file size of a Working Scale document without

affecting quality?

If use a TIFF then it compresses the image without loosing quality of it

What is an advantage of scaling up images before exporting?

If you have a big image and scale it down then the image wont loose quality or texture

What is a disadvantage of scaling up images before exporting?

Scaling up a small image will make the image pixilated and blurry

File Naming ConventionsWhat naming conventions could you use when creating your video game assets?

• I would name my assets useful things like “Video Games Research” or “Video Game designing” something simple that allows me to know what's within the folder

Why is it a good idea to accurately name your assets?

Accurately naming your assets helps to keep confusion down if it was called something like “Work 2” and you needed to edit or come back to it then it may be quite hard to find if you accurately name it then you will recognize it easily and save a lot of time and confusion

Asset ManagementWhy would you use folders when storing

your assets?Using folders helps to keep work organized and easy to get to

What folders would you create and what would you save within them

• I would name the folders something that relates to what work I’d be storing in for example say I had a PowerPoint looking a research of video games I would call the folder “Video Game Research”
