What is custom framing and how is it different from readymade framing
You have got your picture ready but now are hinging between choosing the right frames
for your picture. There are two broad categories in which frames exists- Custom frames
and readymade frames. It is very important to thoroughly understand both types of frame
before making your final decision .
Readymade frames
Factory made, assembled offsite and ready to be used immediately by the consumer is the
appropriate description of a frames that are ready made. Their specifications are
according to the manufacturer’s preference and are normally made into standard sized
such as 6x4, 8x10 etc. Ready made frame can be placed on a table top or hung on wall
and can be bought by at almost any retailer. Ready-made frames can also be made in
various materials such as plastic, acrylic including wood and metal. These frames are
inexpensive as they are basically created in bulk and come with low glazing and backing
option.
Custom Frames
Custom frames on other hand is handpicked, assembled as per customer specification and
made absolutely to match the need of its client. Custom frames are normally used to
frame oil paintings, valuable art, heirloom and other special painting and pictures. They
can be completely customized and its choice of material and dimension can be absolutely
be as per its clients need. Thus custom frames gives the option to choose your material
and since every part of custom made frame need to be built from scratch the time and
cost required to make a custom frame is more . However the finish and quality you get
with custom frames are unbeatable.
Readymade framed are often the best idea for gifting purposes and custom frames are
often good for framing beautiful piece of work that can matches your artwork. The main

disadvantage of custom frame is that they are costly and take lots of time to make. But if
you want to make your picture priceless then this is the frame for you.
So which frame is best for you? The real fact is there is no frame that suits all needs.
There are some pictures which will look good in a readymade frame and some that are
much better off in a custom frame.
The main question is what type of picture you want to frame. If your picture is a standard
size then readymade frames makes more sense but if it is a precious artwork that you
want to preserve then custom frame is good.
As a rule of thumb, ready-made frame should be used when the photograph can be cut to
standard size and is not too precious. Such examples are digital photograph or posters.
They might have high sentimental value but they can be reprinted at click of mouse.
Custom made frame are best to preserve family heirloom and irreplaceable artwork and
has the flexibility to choose high quality such as acid free materials that can preserve the
artwork for decades.
Ultimately the frame you choose should be based on your budget, pictures value
(monetarily and emotional both) with proper consideration being given to the place where
you are going to hang it.
