My project:design methodology
By Antonisia Schroder
Step one: finding a concept and developing my idea
Dolly the cloned sheep
David Rorvik – who claimed to have witnessed a human cloning
Step two: learning from History 2.0 – building my imagination
The ‘floating’ Lotus Hotel in the Xiangshawan desert in Mongolia
Akira Yamaguchi combines modern technology with traditional Japanese painting styles
Marguerite Humeau attempted to recreate the vocal tracts of prehistoric creatures
History 2.0: a research paper produced by trend forecasting agency WGSN to look at how art and design may combine with science to influence future developments
Step three: finding other inspiration – other artists, research, exhibitions
United Visual Artists, Barbican, London – simplicity of concept; showed how art can touch ALL our senses
Elisa Strozyk – created ceramic tables
Lucy McRae – body architect – makes graphic conceptions of the human body
Bart Hess – showcases and manipulates the human body through art and design
Step four: using photography to begin to visualise my concept
Step five: consider in more detail the links between design and futurism; science and art
Natsai Audrey Chieza’s work on design futurism
Changing societal views on science fiction – women taking on more powerful/important roles
Potential design ideas for the ‘iWatch’
Step six: do LOTS of experimenting! Learn from failures – allow them to develop the project rather
than hinder it
Step seven: allow the experimenting to guide the project, within reason
Step eight: bringing the experiments back in line with the concept
Step nine: finalising the project and considering potential next steps
Animatronic engineering possibilities
Final product was made from straw, oil, flour, corn starch, glycerine, water, food colouring, sugar and salt. It had to be heated while being mixed.
Step ten: preparing for the final exhibition
