Conventions of Magazines- The Main Image.

The main image is positioned in the centre of the magazine. The shot will have to the subjects eye line within one of the intersections on the rule of thirds grid to gain audience focus and is able to have a social connection between the magazine and the audience. The shot type can be a close up a medium close up a long shot ect….

The audience being familiar with the genre of music will allow them to recognize the artist on the front cover, successful magazine institutions use celebrities as this could help the magazine sell. From the first slide there are artists such as Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. Who people out of the target audience would also recognize.

Ed Sheerans Eye contact intimidates the audience.

Conventions Of Magazines- Date Line

A dateline is used to assure that the audience are reading up to date articles, especially if it was about events such as concerts. On Billboards magazine with Katy Perry, the date is small and is hidden below the masthead, connotes that it is less important as the magazines, which are marketed are up to date anyway.

Conventions Of Magazines- The Masthead

The masthead is placed at the top of the page, it is used so that the audience will be able to identify the brand of the product, and would recognize it if they where to see it on another magazine. It is the most important, stands out and attracts the audience.

In the image below, ‘Billboard’, the masthead is covered by the Justins face, however the audience is still able to identify this which connotes the success of the brand.

Conventions of magazines- Selling lines

Selling lines are placed above or below the masthead, they are smaller than the masthead and usually the cover lines. It acts as a introductory headline describing the magazine.

Conventions of magazines- The Cover line

The cover line is placed below the masthead. It is often in a small font and less noticeable than the Masthead and the headline. The audience would look to the cover line to find out what the magazine would be about, so that audience would already be interested therefor it wouldn’t need to be as demanding as the head line.

What colours are conventional?

The colours being bright will draw attention to the target audience. Contrasting colours work well with each other to help it stand out. The colours commonly used in pop magazines are pink which connotes feminity, warmth and love. Blue which connotes confidence, intelligence, communication . Red which connotes masculinty, ennergy , excitement.

Conventions of the pop genre- The mood

A convention of the magazine is the mood, the mood also depends on the colors and the lyrics even though the lyrics can be emotional, the mood always seems positive with the pop genre.

Conventions of the pop genre- The clothing. The clothing is a convention of the pop genre

but also the hair and makeup of the artist. Women in the media and in pop are always wearing makeup, it can be used to show the artists feelings and also their insecurities. With female pop artists the clothing is revealing, which would tease a male audience so this contradicts my point of them being vulnerable. The clothing would be of bright colors, contrasting with the rock genre where they would appear more heavy and gothic like wearing black clothing and leather jackets.

Richard Dyes Star Theory Stars are manufactured by the music industry to

serve a purpose- to make money out of the audiences. Record companies shape their stars. They manufacture what they think the audiences want. Markets that are not by the hype and don’t want to spend their money on the blandness. Pop stars are clearly the product of their record company.

The record industry also has a duty to provide artists who are perceived as real for these audiences. Something fresh for the audience (younger audience) , produce a star with a long lasting appeal.

Conventional Ideologies Presented By The Pop Genre

There are positive and negative representations of artists in the media. We expect men to be represented as dominate characters because that is how they are in society, whereas the way women are represented in the music industry are not reflective of women in real life. Some artists use their femininity to their advantage, whereas others reject it, David Gauntletts empowered female, because they want to have the same importance to the male.

Iconography In pop music the both the female and

male artists are postmodernists, they re create an identity of themselves in the media, different from reality.

For the pop genre I am going to accept the conventions because I would want it to follow other pop magazines, ones which have made success. I think this would be most suited as it appeals to a younger audience, as they like to feel happy.
