10 Most Unique Bridges in the WorldOver centuries, man has been making attempts to cross over many features including oceans, mountains, and deserts. The following are among the top ten fascinating bridges of all time.

10) Slauerhoffbrug Bridge

It’s a fascinating bridge found in Leeuwarden-Netherlands. The bridge is fully automated having two structures resembling arms that swing a section of the road in and out within the road itself. It was designed by Van Driel Mechatronica to be a fully automatic bridge with the ability to sense and adapt to its surroundings. Due to the natural rivers and high boat traffic experienced in Netherlands, there was a need for a bridge that would quickly raise and lower over small waterways this lead to the construction of such a bridge.

9)Rialto Bridge, Italy

It’s among the oldest Bridges dating back to the 15th century. It's built over the Grand canals of Venice. It's believed to have been structured around 1181 where it was the only barge connecting the other side of the Canal, later in 1551 when it was upgraded. The idea of rebuilding the bridge stone was first proposed in 1503 before which other projects were considered before it. The best Architect in history (Michelangelo and Palladio) is believed to offer the plans to redesign the bridge, but it was given to Antonio da Ponte.

8) Akashi-Kaikyō Bridge, Japan

.It’s one of the best pieces of Japanese Engineering officially opened in 1998. It’s the longest Suspension bridge ever Build on Earth covering up to 3.911 kilometers. Links the city of Kobe to Iwaya in the Awaji Island. Its structure was not as intended at the beginning but due to Kobe Earthquake of 1995 lead to the addition of 3 fits hence attaining the current record. The total cost of the construction of the bridge is estimated to be around 500billion yen which is planned to be repaid through levies on vehicles using the bridge. The bridge has led lighting system estimated to be around 1737 bulbs.

7) Stari Most, Bosnia

The name means an ‘Old Bridge.' It crosses River Neretwa connecting the two parts of Bosnia city. The bridge is believed to have been constructed in 1566 and later destroyed in 1993during the outbreak of Bosnia War. It was later rebuilt in the 16th century with more than $13 million and then officiated to the public in 2004.People living nearby have been diving from the bridge making the deck a tourist attraction due to the diving activity. Authenticity is preserved through an integrative rehabilitation of the historic site by the renovation of physical structures of the bridge and introduction of the appropriate functions that results in maintenance of the bridge.  

6) The Gateshead Millennium Bridge, England

It’s a bridge found in River Tyne in England used by cyclists and pedestrians. Opened to the public in 200,the designers being Wilkinson Eyre and Structural Engineer Gifford. The tilting design which had been obtained from Asian Hercules has been awarded several awards over the decade. The bridge takes around 4.5 minutes to rotate through the 40° from closed to open, depending on the wind speed. Its appearance during this man oeuvre has led it to be nicknamed the "Blinking Eye Bridge”. The bridge is always opened to allow the passage of the Royal Navy boats to pass through. 

5) Langkawi Sky Bridge, Malaysia

The bridge has a length of 125-metres curved supported by cables. It was completed in 2005 and is found in Pulau Langkawi in Kedah in Malaysia. It's used by pedestrians only .To get to the top of the bridge one, a boards the Langkawi Cable car to the top station. Upgrading and maintain ace of the bridge always happen once in a while. It offers a spectacular view of hilly areas of Kedah region hence being one of the major tourist sites.

It’s a pedestrian bridge found on the Grand Union canal in Paddington Basin, England. The designer of the bridge was a Briton Architect named Thomas Heartherwick .The Bridge is quite short with a length of 12 meters. With the unusual design, this has made the bridge an interesting tourist attraction. The Bridge rolls with the help of hinges to pave the way for moving boats and its later turn back to its position.

 

3) Chengyang Bridge, China

The bridge is made of combinations ranging from a corridor, veranda, and a Chinese pavilion. It's nicknamed the ‘Wind and Rain Bridge’. It's found in Guangxi province of China deeply hidden by massive mountains and rice fields and span the Linxi River of the Sanjiang County. Built back in 1916 by the Dong people of China. The surprising fact about the bridge is that not a single nail had been used during its construction but entirely relied on some architectural tricks of the Dong community. It's also identified as the Yongji Bridge or Pan long bridge 

2) Langkawi Sky Bridge, Malaysia

It’s a wooden covered bridge moving across River Reuss in the city of Switzerland. It's unique due to the paintings dating back to 17th century. It’s the oldest living wooden bridge in Europe. The bridge serves as the city symbol and a major tourist attraction. About two-thirds of the bridges painting got lost many of them dating as far as 1611 due to fire that razed the bridge 20 years ago.

1) Helix Bridge, Singapore

Helix Bridge is found in Singapore built across river Singapore used by pedestrians. It was officially opened in April 2010.Its Design was an inspiration from the DNA strand structure. It was previously named Double Helix Bridge. It joins the Marina center and with Marina South in the Marina Bay found in Singapore. The Architecture was drawn by a team of Australian architects, Cox group and Arup engineers with other Singapore-based Architects. The 3-D design of the bridge was developed using the Arup software. The Helix Bridge is illuminated by ribbons of LED lights accentuating the interplay of the two helix tubes on the deck.
