Spain The constitution of 1978 has divided the country of Spain into

17 autonomias (states) Most states were divided by their history and language

The three most distinct are: Galicia, Pais Vasco, Cataluna The official language of Spain is Castillano, a distinct dialect

of Spanish Catholicism is the official language of Spain

Though there is an official language and religion, each province is able to have their own

Each of the 17 provinces has their own government, however the must abide by the Countries laws and government as well

Galicia The language of Galicia is Gallego; a

dialect of Spanish Capital: Santiago de Compstela Provinces (4): A Coruna, Lugo, Ourense,

Pontevedra Population: 2,724,544

Climate The climate is best described as oceanic

It has moderate summers and winters, not too hot or cold This area receives a large amount of rain.

The capital Santiago de Compostela receives the most amount of rain in all of Spain

The land of Galicia The majority of the land is green due to all of the rain the

area recieves There are also numerous forests and rivers

Main Products Corn, grapes, kiwi are the most common

grown foods The green grapes grown are most turned into

white wines which are often times sent to other countries, this is one of Galicia’s main exported goods

Cattle is also important to the area Meat and milk are gained from these animals

País Vasco The official language of País Vasco is

Vasco No one is sure where this language is derrived

from unlike Gallego and Catalan which are derived from the Latin language

Capital: Vitoria Provinces (3): Álava, Guipúzcoa, Vizcaya Population: 2,098,628

Climate The climate of País Vasco is the same as

Galicia; Oceanic In addition, there are a few mountains and

several forests The coast has beautiful beaches

Terrorist Group ETA This group was formed in 1959 by a group of

students who wanted País Vasco to be independent from Spain

It started as non-violent and the students used culture and art to express their opinions

In 1961, a gentleman was killed by one of the students and that initiated the group to use violence

The terrorist group used to only be a problem in País Vasco, but now is spreading throughout Spain and continues to be a problem today

Cataluña/Catalonia The official language of Cataluña is Catalan Capital: Barcelona Provinces (4): Barcelona, Tarragona,

Lleida, Girona Population: 6,147,610

Climate The climate of Cataluña is Mediterranean The winters are mild, but the summers are

very warm with little rain The land is often dry and desert like The Ebro river helps create an area of

fertile land The Pirineos mountains are also a part of

the land in Cataluña

Immigration to Cataluña Many people have moved from their current

location to Cataluña because of the metal industry offering many jobs

Immigration was huge in the 1960’s Cataluña has become a diverse area

because of the various groups arriving, such as those from southern Spain and even parts of Northern Africa
