Óbidos is a town of approximately 3100 inhabitants located in the Estremadura Province, in Portugal. The area was taken from the Moors by the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1148

Church of Santa Maria

The area of the town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall, but divided between the two parishes of São Pedro and Santa Maria in the municipality of Óbidos.

The Church of Santa Maria was the setting for the wedding of King Afonso V to his cousin, Princess Isabella of Coimbra, on 15 August 1441, when they were both still children aged 9 and 10, respectively

Pelourinho e Telheiro

Pelourinho e Telheiro (Pillory)It was built in granite in the in the end of the 15th century. It represented power, as well as a symbol of municipal independence. It was also used to punish criminals. On one side, it has a shield with the royal coat of arms; and on the other side, a fishing net that Queen Leonor of Lencastre gave to the town in memory of the loss of her son, the Royal prince Afonso, representing the fishing net in which the fishermen brought the body of her only son who died in a hunting accident.

Praça de Santa Maria

Located in Saint Mary’s Square, this church is found in the main square of the Town. Legend has it that it was founded during the Visigoth period. Later, it became a Mosque and after King Afonso Henriques’ conquest from the Moors, it became a Christian Temple once again. Saint Teotónio was its first prior of this church. Later, King João III endowed it his wife, Queen Catarina of Austria

King Afonso V of Portugal

The 1535 earthquake damaged this church, but it was immediately reconstructed. It was commissioned by Queen Catarina and prior Rodrigo Sanches. It was after these works that this church got its current appearance

The interior is divided in three naves and has a painted wooden ceiling dated back to 1676.

The walls are covered with blue and white tiles from c. 1680-1690.

In the chancel, covered with blue and yellow tiles, one can find the retable (c. 1620-1622) by the painter João da Costa

one of the first works of art of the Portuguese Renaissance,the tomb of João de Noronha and his wife Isabel de Sousa. It is considered a national monument and dates back to 1529-1532. It is made from ançã stone, coming from the region of Coimbra.
