The old city of

Jaffa, just south of Tel Aviv, is full of winding streets and odd

corners. I took this shot on Mazal Dagim

St. (which means, Sign of

the Fish), just as

this couple

was opening up their store.

A while back, I posted a beach

shot, Tel Aviv Back Then, showing the

Tel Aviv beach "scene" in 1971. Well, things have changed a bit, as

this 2009 shot shows. Tel Aviva's LOVE the beach, and this shot is

focused on a Thursday

afternoon crowd.

"Jerusalem bagels" are like regular bagels,

only about 2 feet (60 cm)

long. Because each one makes a meal for2 or 3 (or 4?) people, I

never did eat one, but

however they may taste, they

make for fascinating

photos. They are sold all over Jerusalem, though I don't recall seeing

them elsewhere in Israel.

Mahane Yehuda, about a kilometer (0.6 mile) west of the Old City and close to the

central bus station, is a huge outdoor covered market. It's always busy (except on

Saturdays, of course), but on Friday afternoon it's especially jammed as people

rush to buy food for the Friday evening meal, the start of Shabbat (Sabbath). In the WS is a shot of challah, the classic Shabbat

bread.

The photo was shot at the Baha'i gardens in Haifa. The gardens, located

in Haifa, comprise a staircase of nineteen terraces extending all the way up the northern slope of Mount Carmel. The golden-domed Shrine of

the Babb, the resting place of the Prophet-Herald of the Baha'i Faith,

stands on the central terrace, looking across the bay towards ‘Akko.

The Old City streets may be best seen in the morning, when the light and shadows are

strong, but the place is not yet crowded with tourists. I was

checking out this typical street -

typical in that it is narrow and NOT

flat - watching the storekeepers start to open up, when I saw this Orthodox Jew coming up the

street. I waited until he stepped into the sunlight so that his hair

and beard would be backlit. I have no idea what the

young guy is doing sitting in

the middle of the street.

Durex products are

manufactured and

commercialized by a company

called SSL International, a

British multinational.

1,000,000,000 units are

manufactured every year, in 17

factories worldwide.

Their global market share is

about 25%, leading in many countries but in the US they are number 2, after

"Trojan".

The name means "DUrability, Reliability,

EXcellence".

They are not dancers or singers.

In silence, this large group was doing spiritual exercises,

apparently in great meditation, as a soft voice coming from the

speakers constantly said: "Peace... Compassion...

Tolerance..."

This discipline is called "Falun Gong", founded in China quite

recently, in 1992, as a variation of traditional "qigong" practices.

For some reason the activity is illegal and subject to persecution

in China.

Today, shorts are worn by either sex from birth through old age without any stigma

attached.

But historically, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, shorts were worn as outerwear only by young boys. Because of this, men

would not wear shorts to avoid looking immature.

There are many styles of shorts. In the US "shorts" can also refer to underwear.
