What is GYSD?

Global Youth Service Day……

•Is April 20-22, 2012.

•Is the largest service event in the world.

• Engages millions of youth all over the world to

improve their communities through volunteerism and

community service.

•Is carried out in over 100 countries.

•The only global day of service dedicated to children and

youth.

GYSD in El Paso

Last year…..

•More than 4,500 youth participated in community

service projects

• Engaged more than 44 youth organizations to

participate in Global Youth Service Day

•Projects included clean-ups, non-perishable food

collections, garden planting and family shelter

renovations.

•Project conducted a Kick-off celebration that was held

on April 15th at the Chamizal National monument.

•Invite team members to share their

skills, experiences, and resources. Everyone has

something to offer.

and follow-through are important.

•Clearly explain and write out guidelines and

instructions for all tasks.

•Commit time and energy to do the work.

Investigation

• Budget - Determine expenses (if any) for

materials, equipment and services you will

need to complete your project, such as

tools, transportation costs, and promotional

materials.

•Development – Research sources of

funding and materials

Preparation and Planning

• Fundraising - Hold fundraising

events, submit grant applications and

approach potential donors and sponsors.

•Record Keeping - Keep a record of all donations and in-kind support for the project.

Inform the community of your fundraising

progress.

Recognition

Recognize and thank all funders prior to and during your

GYSD project.

• Place funders’ names and logos on your website, on

GYSD t-shirts, event signs and flyers.

• Acknowledge funders during the GYSD kick-off activities

and closing celebrations.

• Provide funders with an opportunity to speak at your

GYSD event. Your supporters often make terrific guest

speakers.

#5 – Mobilizing Volunteers

•Determine how many volunteers you need for

your project

•Write a brief volunteer description

•Create and follow a recruitment plan

•Once recruited, keep volunteers engaged and

informed

•Provide a volunteer orientation

•Perform a mid-project assessment of volunteer

activities

•Ensure volunteers have the necessary supplies

and that their needs are met
