Top 5 Places to Explore in Chandigarh

#1 Sukhna Lake

Located in Sector 1,

Chandigarh, Sukhna is a rainfed

lake at the foothills of Shivalik

hills. It is an inseparable part of

Chandigarh. Spread over an

area of 3 square kms, Sukhna is

a symbol of peace and serenity.

A promenade runs along the

lake. Best time to visit Sukhna is

at sunrise. Serious walkers

pursue an exercise regime,

families enjoy an evening stroll

#2 Rose Garden

The Zakir Hussain Rose

Garden is spread over an area

of 30 acres and has the

distinction of being the largest

garden of Asia. It houses 50,000

rose bushes of 1600 different

species. Apart from roses, the

garden has trees of medicinal

value. The Rose Garden adds to

the romantic value to the city

beautiful. The garden also hosts

myriad of events throughout the

year.

Tip: Visit the garden in the

months of February-March to

witness the Rose Festival.

#3 Rock Garden

Nek Chand’s Rock Garden is

a sculpture garden spread over

an area of 40 acres. It is

completely built of industrial

and home waste and thrown-

away items. The Rock Garden

is located near the Sukhna

Lake. It consists of man-made

interlinked waterfalls and many

other sculptures that have been

made of scrap and other kinds

of wastes. Started as an illegal

project, the Rock garden is now

a jewel in the crown of

Chandigarh.

#4 Chattbir Zoo

Chattbir Zoo is a zoological park

located on the Chandigarh-

Zirakpur-Patiala road, 17 km

away from Chandigarh. The 202

acres large zoo is the home for

hundreds of different mammals,

birds and reptiles. Chattbir is

famous for its lion safari where

visitors are taken on an

adventurous trip to the Asiatic

Lion reserve inside the zoo. The

zoo also houses the Royal Bengal

Tiger which is a highlight of the

zoo.

Tip: The zoo is open from 0900

hours to 1700 hours on all days

except Mondays and National

holidays.

#5 Open Hand Monument

The Open Hand structure was

designed by none other than Le

Corbusier, the architect of

Chandigarh. The 85 feet high

monument is a symbol of “peace

and reconciliation. It is open to give

and open to receive.” It represents

the open exchange of ideas. The

Open Hand is the de facto emblem

of Chandigarh. The monument is

located in Sector 1 in the Capitol

Complex in Chandigarh. The

structure is designed to move in the

direction of the wind.

Timber Trail

Timber Trail is an exotic

recreational point located in

Parwanoo which is just 6 kms

away from the Haryana-

Himachal Pradesh border.

Golf Club

Located just south of Sukhna

Lake, the Golf Club is a private

members only golf club in

18 hole course known for its

long 613 yard long, dogleg 7th

hole and floodlighting on the first

nine holes. The club has a fine

clubhouse, a swimming pool

Thunder Zone

Thunder Zone is an

amusement and water park

located just 13 kms away from

the heart of Chandigarh. It has

some of the best water slides

and rides. The park also has

lush green lawns making it

perfect for family outings. It

has 12 rides and 4 pools. The

Thunder Zone is spread over

an area of 11 acres.

Tip: The amusement park is

open from 9.30 AM to 7.30 PM

on weekdays and from 9.00

AM to 8.30 PM on Sundays.

Baisakhi Festival

Baisakhi or the harvest festival

is celebrated all over North India

with euphoria and energy on

13th or 14th April. The festival

holds a special significance for

the Sikhs as it was on this day in

1699 that their tenth Guru, Guru

Gobind Singh started the Khalsa

panth. It also marks the

beginning of the New Year.

Cultural programs are organized

throughout the city and

Chandigarh is the best place to

be during Vaisakhi. Hordes of

people throng the Gurudwaras

in their best attires and eat

delicious food.
