Where is Catalonia?

Catalonia is in Spain. We are in the west of Europe.

Where is Catalonia? Spain is divided into 16

political regions. They are called comunitats autonomas, and Catalonia is one of them. We have some political power. Some people are happy with the power we have, some others would like to have more power and some would even like Catalonia to be an independent country.

Facts about Catalonia:

•We have our own language, Catalan, and we also speak Spanish, so we are bilingual.

•The Catalan government is called Generalitat.

•This is our flag

•Montilla is our president

CATALAN TRADITIONS

Traditions Catalonian festivals

and traditions unify Catalan society and help to give it its particular character.

We are going to talk about some of these traditions. We hope you like them.

Correfoc

The correfocs is a festival, in which "devils" play with fire and with people. These devils are not evil; they are full of energy, happy and gay, dancing to the sound of drums and the gralla (a tradicional instrument), while they the fireworks go off.

Sardanes

Sardana is considered to be the Catalan national dance. It is danced in circles while the music is playing.

Another tradition takes place during the spring festival of Sant Jordi (St.George’s Day).

There’s a story about a dragon and a princess. On this day, people give each other roses and books as presents.

THE END

These aren’t all of our traditions, but now at least you know about the most important amongst them.
