The Whitsunday Islands, named by James Cook in 1770 are a sailors' paradise

Airlie Beach's original name was the town of "Airlie". It received this name in 1935 when the Proserpine town Chairman requested a name for a new subdivision on the coast.

It was confirmed in 1936

The name Airlie Beach was approved by Council 31 January 1987
