Today, nearly 2 billion people own a smartphone.

Our job as designers and developers is to ensure they can do

so without difficulties. That's

what UX is all about.

Everyday, millions of people interact

with apps and Internet services.

So what exactly is User Experience (UX)?

+

• UX is all the aspects of how people use an interactive product: the way it feels in their hands, how well they understand how it works, how they feel about it while they’re using it, how well it serves their purposes, and how well it fits into the entire context in which they are using it.

• UX is everything you need to know, think about and do to make sure that you are launching the right product for the right people.

interactive product: the way it feels in their hands, how well they understand how it works, how they feel about it while they’re using it, how well it serves their purposes, and how well it fits into the entire context in which they are using it.

• UX is everything you need to know, think about and do to make sure that you are launching the right product for the right people.

• UX is a measure of the ease and pleasure users feel when they use your app or visit your site.

What about UX Design?• User experience design (UXD) is the process of

enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the product.

A UX designer creates a good UX.

A good UX is one which makes users effective.

Why does UX matter?• Customer satisfaction: Access to your competition

is many times just a click or download away• Engagement: Keep users interested in your offer• Conversion: Turn users into customers

Elements of UX Design• Visual design• Information

architecture• Interaction design• Usability• User research• Content strategy

UX and UI (user interface) design are NOT the same thing.

Six Fundamentals of UX Design

UX Fundamentals

1: Focus on the UserPut yourself in their shoes. Seek to understand their needs, motivations and constraints. Before making any decisions, ask yourself, “How will this affect my users?”

UX Fundamentals

2: Do your researchKnow what you're dealing with. Understand your product field and your competition. Understand your team and your target audience.

Test your assumptions on friends, relatives and likely users. Adapt your plans based on what you learn

3: Strive for simplicity and clarityMake sure your message and intents are clear. Prioritize what is best for your users and do your best to remove obstacles from their path.Don't try to give them all the information at once.

UX Fundamentals

4: Prioritize speedDon't waste your users' time. Get the user to task completion as quickly and intuitively as possible.Make the most important actions the easiest to accomplish. Use existing conventions so users don't get confused.

5: Never stop learningCollect data and use it to get better. Seize every opportunity to learn from the insights you get about how your product is being used.Use analytics and experiments to understand usage and adapt your product to build on what you find out.

UX Fundamentals

6: Solve big problemsAim high and innovate in your choice of product area and approach. Look for opportunities to create value for users. Think of creative ways to meet users' needs proactively.Observe and think about how the application of technology could change things.

UX Case Studies

Causing user confusion...

The “Next” button? Where's that?

The “Next” button? Where's that?

Does “Son” mean that I'm his son or that he's my son?

Information overload

Go for simplicity and fun

Other common UX fails

• Putting “Save” and “Back” (or “Clear”) buttons too close to each other (and colouring them similarly)

• Making users fill forms that are too long or ask for too much information

• Requiring users to sign in without showing them the benefits

• Taking users out of your app (eg to a browser) and expecting them to return

• Designing sites with too many multimedia elements (increased load time)

• Using visual elements from one platform on all platforms

• Intrusive advertisements

Good UX practices

• Using auto-suggest and autocomplete so users have to type less

• Overriding defaults by user preferences

• Being transparent in pricing (let users know what they are paying for and why)

• Using buttons instead of hyperlinked text in mobile apps

• Providing sort or search options to help users get through a long list of items

• Providing clear “Previous“ and “Next“ +buttons for site navigation

• Offering discounts and incentives to promote user engagement

• Asking only for needed permissions and explaining the reasons

Conclusion: The Future of UX Design• UXD has its roots in ergonomics, where engineers

built machines so that they fit in with the user and brought him/her minimal discomfort.

• With the advent of computers, smartphones, and the Web, UX design took its present form: focusing on websites and apps.

• UX design is becoming increasingly important as more and more “smart” devices are built: smartwatches, smart glasses, smart cars, smart thermostats, and eventually smart homes.
