The Deutsches Museum is one of the most important muse-

ums of natural sciences and technology worldwide. Many of

the more than 100,000 objects at the three sites in Munich

are extremely sensitive to temperature and humidity: For

example, the wood in historical coaches must be protected

from cracking, the metal in vintage cars from corrosion, and

astronauts’ space suits from mould. Data loggers from Testo

In the musical instrument collection, the museum staff have

Temperature and humidity measurements are required in theDeutsches Museum for various reasons:• Exhibits such as the keyboard instruments of the musical in-strument collection are particularly sensitive to temperature andhumidity. Climate values and limit value violations must be reli-ably monitored, stored and documented.

• Some exhibition rooms can develop into climatically critical areasdepending on the weather conditions. Against this background,

the measuring instruments must be flexibly applicable and easyto use.

• The adherence to agreed temperature and humidity values mustbe provable to lenders. For this reason, the climate data must beclearly, uninterruptedly and graphically documented in weekly ormonthly reports.

The Deutsches Museum, founded1903 in Munich, is today the mostheavily frequented museum in Germany, with 1.3 million visitorsannually. It displays objects from around 50 areas of the natural

sciences and technology over an area of73,000 m². The objective of the museum’smanagement is to bring scientific and tech-nical insights closer to the visitors in an un-derstandable way. In addition to the mainbuilding on Museum Island, further attrac-tions are the aviation museum FlugwerftSchleissheim and the traffic centre at There-sienhoehe, as well as the Deutsches Mu-seum Bonn.

With their help, it is possible at any time to determinewhether valuable exhibits are in danger dueto humidity, heat or cold, whether thehumidifying system in a room needs to beswitched on, or whether an exhibition mayeven need to be temporarily closed due tothe high summer temperatures.
