Smart Grid Power Point Slide Prepared For PowerGrid. By: Amarendra Shah

Citation preview

A smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses analog or digital information and

communication technology to gather and act on information, such as information about the

behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency,

reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity.

Smart grid is not a technology but a vision to transform the existing power grid in to a very effective and efficient system which shall benefit both utility and the consumer.

Smart grid shall be the conglomeration of present Electrical Power System, Information and Communication technology that offers (i.) efficient (ii.) Realiable and cost effective delivery of electrical power.

DisadvantagesDisadvantages

Infrastructure is inadequate and requires augmentation to support the growth of Smart Grids.

Most renewable resources are intermittent and can not be relied on (in its present form)for secure energy supply.

Regulatory Policies to deal with consequences of Smart Grid; like off peak, peak tariffs and other related matters.

Grid Operation : Monitoring & control.

For Utilities:1.Reduction of T & D losses in all utilities.2.Peak Load Management3.Reduction in Power purchase cost4. Increased grid Visibility.5.Self Healing grid6.Renewable integration

For Customers1.Expand access to electricity- “Power for

ALL”2. Improve reliability of supply to all customers

with no more power cuts.3. Improve Quality of Supply4.User friendly and transparent interface with

utilities.5. Increased choices for consumers, including

green power.

For Government & Regulators:

1.Satisfied customers2.Financially sound utilities3. System upgrade & modernization4.Reduction in emission intensity

Vision-Smart Grid/City

SMART GRID/CITY PROJECT IN PUDUCHERRY

POWERGRID has taken a pioneering initiative to develop Smart Grid Pilot Project at Puducherry through collaborative efforts jointly with Electricity Departments, Govt. of Puducherry for demonstration of efficacy.

More than 50 organization has participated with POWERGRID for this unique initative.

Salient Features of AMI Implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

consisting of Smart Meters, Data Concentrator Unit (DCU), In home Display unit, Communication network, Meter Data Acquisition System(MDAS), Meter Data Management (MDM) integrated on a single platform

Demonstration of indigenous capability in Clean Energy Development through AMI

Implementation Strategy

On the recommendation of ISGTF, Government of India has made efforts in developing low cost indigenous smart meter.

• Committee to decide on including functionalities like export/import and connect/disconnect in the smart meter and the methods of commuting the consumption and other parameters to the consumer including In-House Display.

• On finalization of functional specifications efforts

will be initiated to develop indigenous low cost smart meter .

Demonstration of “REAL LIFE SMART HOME”

For Large Scale Renewable Integrations

A Comprehensive master plan for grid integration of large scale renewable capacity addition in 12th Five year Plan across India has been formulated in the Green Energy Corridors” report available at http://www.powergridindia.com.
