PREFACE

Ώ During the past two decades, there has been an unprecedented growth in the number of products and services, which utilize information gained by monitoring and measuring using different types of sensors. The development of sensors to meet the need is referred to as sensor technology and is applicable in a very broad domain including the environment, medicine, commerce and industry.

Ώ Through the 15 independent Technology Foresight panels, covering a wide range of industrial sectors, the worldwide need for sensor technology was reinforced. In 13 out of 15 panels, sensor technology was seen as an integral element in the overall development of products and services. In fact it emerged as the key technology to support a wide variety of research and industrial applications.

INTODUCTION A sensor is a converter that measures a

physical quantity and converts it into a signal which can be read by an observer or by an (today mostly electronic) instrument.

QUALITIES OF A GOOD SENSOR

A good sensor obeys the following rules:

Is sensitive to the measured property only

Is insensitive to any other property likely to be encountered in its application

Does not influence the measured property

WORKING Based on function of

sensing function,each sensor works accordingly.

But, the working principle is same in all sensors, i.e., the processor that used in sensor calculates accordingly

Transducer is a device which transforms energy from one type to another, even if both energy types are in the same domain.

CATEGORIZATION OF SENSORS Classification based on physical phenomena

o Mechanical: strain gage, displacement (LVDT), velocity (laser vibrometer), accelerometer, tilt meter, viscometer, pressure, etc.

o Thermal: thermal coupleo Optical: camera, infrared sensoro Others …

sensing, piezoelectricity, etc. Materials capable of converting of one form of energy

to another are at the heart of many sensors. o Invention of new materials, e.g., “smart” materials,

would permit the design of new types of sensors.

MOTION SENSING

This is the technology that we are using and developing from decades.

• The term ‘Motion sensors’ can be used to refer to any kind of sensing system which is used to detect motion; motion of any object or motion of human beings.

• Motion sensing is used in number of applications

•           Automated lighting system

•           Security systems

•           Smart Floodlights

•           Burglar Alarm

•   Radar Guns

ADVANTAGES

security problems. - They protect your valuables - Some are easily

acsessable- eg. cash points They control things properly eg. street

traffic
