Past, present and future

Enrique Verdes IT Senior Specialist

What are we going to talk aboutThe past:

Two years ago (FISL 8) I gave a talk about Pandora 1.3. We talked about architecture, Agents, and Modules.

The present:

Today I want to present the new features of Version 2;

also we will talk about scalability and success stories;

The future:

and we will take a look at the version 3 features.

At the heart of PandoraFMS

PandoraFMS Data processing

Architecture

What do we have today...

Recon Server &Network Maps.

Prediction Server.

Export Server (Enterprise Version).

Remote WMI monitoring server (Windows) & Plugin Server (Unix).

New AJAX visual console to build custom maps.

Agents configuration from the web console.

Combined alerts.

Tentacle

Tentacle is a client/server file transfer protocol that aims to be:

Secure by design.

Easy to use.

Versatile and cross-platform.

Desde el 02/JUN/2009 Tentacle is an official protocol, with port 41121/TCP registered by IANA.

Recon Server & Network Map

Recon Server. Used to sweep the network and detect new alive systems. Recon server can also apply a monitoring "template" to new detected systems, and default modules to monitor immediately the new system.

Plugin Server

Plugin Server Is a Pandora FMS server created in order to perform user defined complex checks.

Users develop plugins in any language they want and they are implemented into Pandora FMS interface and managed in a centralized way.

Prediction Server

The new Pandora FMS artificial intelligence and prediction server sets up in an statistic way a data prediction based on past data.

It is possible to implement different engines of processing info to make predictions.

Monitoring of Windows Machines

WMI Server. Pandora FMS Server created to do native WMI calls in a centralized way. With it, Windows system data can be collected in a remote way without agent.

For windows agent there's a new module module_logevent, to obtain information from Windows event log. This module gives back the events that agree with a defined pattern, allowing also to filter according the source and the kind of event.

Scalability – Case study

Spanish telecommunications operator (name withheld)

Operations in Spain, Great Britain and Latin America

Migrate to PandoraFMS from Netiq and BMC Patrol

5.000 servers

Saves € 5.000 on licensing costs

Scalability – The design

Scalability - Strategies

Keep less data: automatic database maintenance reduces volume of data storage.

Historical database

But... prediction server needs data to work on. Flag data for prediction.

Divide & Conquer

Load balance servers to handle large amount of data.

Multiple web consoles eases management and control tasks.

Other success storiesGestamp Automoción:

Manufacturing plants in 30 countries.

Monitor all IT and communications infrastructure from a central location in Madrid.

CEMAT http://www.cematsa.com/

(selected to perform QA on Eurocopter build project)

Monitors humidity chambers

Gather data and graphs for material certification

Alarms to control water pumps and air conditioning systems

The Future: V.3Modular Dashboard with tabs and modules. Web

console extensions.

Inventory (Versión Enterprise)

Interactive graphs (flash)

New SNMP console

Browseable network maps

Asyncronous agents

Every module will have a state (Normal, Warning and Critical).

Better incident management system.
