When Neil was born.

• Neil was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930.

• He was the eldest of his brothers and sisters.

• When he was 14 he began taking flying lessons.

Neil’s Family

• He married Janet Shearon. The couple soon added to their family

• Son Eric arrived in 1957, followed daughter Karen in 1959.

Naval Aviator

• He served as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952.

• Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1955.

• On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on the moon.

• He was the commander of Apollo 11 lunar module, and was accompanied by Edwin E. Aldrin.

Medals and Awards

• The Congressional Space Medal of Honor was authorized by the United States Congress in 1969

• "any astronaut who in the performance of his duties has distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious efforts and contributions to the welfare of the Nation and mankind."

Death

• Sadly Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio
