What happened, When, Time.

The Rena grounded on astrolabe reef on Wednesday 5 October 2011.

Oil from Rena began washing ashore at Mount Maunganui beach on 10 October.

Bad weather that night caused the ship to shift and that shift caused further damage, resulting in a further 130 - 350 tonnes of oil leaking.

What caused this to happen?

The spill was caused by the grounding of the MV Rena on the Astrolabe Reef.

The Captain of the Rena has been blamed for the ship’s grounding on the reef in Tauranga.

He was charged with negligence.

Organisations that assisted

'Operation Beach Clean‘ Oil Spill Response Limited provided

support to Maritime New Zealand in the response to the Rena oil spill.

Oiled wildlife network. Ordinary People were involved in the

clean up.

Effects to Wild Life

What’s happening now The number of containers recovered from

Rena has risen to 561. Beaches are cleaner and safe for people to

swim again. Fishermen can now catch fish and people

who had lost their jobs can now have them back.

The clean up is on going. Some shipping companies have relocated

from Auckland to Tauranga.

Wild life Care A total of 409 birds were being cared for

in the Te Maunga wildlife facility at the height of the response, including 345 little blue penguins, 60 New Zealand dotterel and 4 pied shags.

120 rare New Zealand dotterels in Bay of Plenty area – 60 pre-emptively caught and cared for at the wildlife facility.

2,410 dead birds collected, of which 1448 were oiled.
