• We are going to go outside on our playground to sketch plants

• PLEASE SKETCH 1 PLANT WITH AS MUCH DETAIL AS YOU CAN

Chapter 1: Plants and How They Grow

Chapter 1: Plants and How They Grow

Lesson 1 What are the main parts of a

plant?

Lesson 1 What are the main parts of a

plant?

What All Living Things Need…

• What do plants and animals need to live?

What All Living Things Need…(continued)

• Plants can make their own food

• How do they do this?

What All Living Things Need…(continued)

• Most plants have 4 main parts– Leaves– Roots– Stems – Flowers

Why Plants Need Leaves

• A plant’s leaves make up its leaf system• What is a SYSTEMSYSTEM?

– A system consists of parts that work together

• Leaves come in all shapes and sizes and help make food = a kind of sugar called GLUCOSE

• Make food through

Why Plants Need Leaves (continued)

• Carbon dioxide is a gas in the air that enters the plant through tiny holes on the underside of the leaves.

• Water passes from the soil through roots and stems into each leaf.

• The leaves change the carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.

• Oxygen goes out from the plant through the same holes on the lower surface of the leaves.

Other Ways Leaves Help Plants

• Help plants balance water– Let out water through holes – Have wax or fuzzy coatings to keep

water in• May help protect plant

– Poisonous– Sharp– Tough to chew

Time to Record Your Findings…

• Please label the leaves on your sketch

• Write at least 2 ways in which leaves help plants grow.
