Maps and ethics
“The map is the perfect symbol of the state.”
“Maps can even make nuclear war appear survivable.”
“People trust maps, and intriguing maps attract the eye as well as connote authority.”
“Like guns and crosses, maps can be good or bad, depending on who’s holding them, who they’re aimed at, how they’re used, and why.”
“As display systems become more flexible, and more like video games, users must be wary that maps, however realistic, are merely representations, vulnerable to bias in both what they show and what they ignore.”

Internet GIS?
Location Based
Services?
A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. (GIS.com)
Is Internet Mapping GIS? Andrew Turner’s Thoughts - the claim that a web map
is GIS is similar to saying that a light switch is Electrical Engineering. Engineering was used in the design and development of the house electrical system and grid. But in the end, the light switch has become a commodity. It’s a device anyone can grab off of a local hardware store shelf and install in their house.

Digital Cartography
From website of Steven Bassett
• It’s own sub-discipline within Geography• Has its own set of
principles• Several texts on the
subject
• Shares a lot of commonality with basic cartographic principles• Representation (map
types, purpose, audience)• Visualization (hierarchy,
color, symbology)
• Interactive maps do add some complications

Example of RULES: For choropleth maps, do not have overlapping values. For classification of interval/ratio data, leave no gaps between boxes, for nominal variables, leave gaps.

Coordinate system including grid reference
Graphic Primitives: margins / frame lines, logos
Insets Typography Symbology
E.g for choropleth maps - increasing darkness (decreasing color value) with increasing numeric value

items to consider…
Communication Concepts
Readers’ "flow" through the map consideration of purpose & audience figure to ground clarity & legibility (e.g. consider size of text and
other symbols for size of map output) Other considerations
page size explanatory text
DESIGN CONCEPT – clearly understood and to the front of the mind
