RESEARCH
The systematic investigation and study of materials
and sources in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions.
Any gathering of data, information and facts for the
advancement of knowledge.
Research is a process of steps used to collect and
analyze information to increase our understanding of a
topic or issue.
It consists of three steps: Pose a question, collect data
to answer the question, and present an answer to the
question.
ABSTRACT
Smart homes hold the potential for increasing
energy efficiency, decreasing costs of energy use,
decreasing the carbon footprint by including
renewable resources and transforming the role of
the occupant.
At the crux of the smart home is an efficient
electric energy management system that is enabled
by emerging technologies in the electricity grid &
consumer electronics.
A smart home should provide families with a
feeling of control over their lives; being relieved
from breakdowns in their daily routines and
getting emotional satisfaction from the things
they value-identity, time and relationships.
In these papers, we explore the roles that a smart
home can play for families to regain control over
their lives and also the art in electricity
management in smart homes & various enabling
technologies that will accelerate this concept.
SUMMARYSmart Homes, Families and Control
Impact on humans.
This paper focuses on the dual-income families
because:
Early adopters of smart home services because of
increased amount of stress.
Ladies are also exposed to greater amount of stress.
Obliged to lead highly structured lives with no
unscheduled situations.
No time to cook and tend to heat and serve quick
dinners.
Research is carried out around activities of waking
up & arriving home; busiest moments of the day
with:
Interviews with the family members
Noting emotions with the most & least favored
experiences
Feedback of families on the smart home
applications.
Alerts during Unscheduled DeviationReduced stress during unexpected weather change,
traffic, unplanned meetings.
Example Parent cannot pick-up the child from school due to a
flat tire & no phone signals.
Smart home pings people that the family counts on.
Neighbour is near by and agrees to pick him up.
Tow truck comes & informs the parent that the child is safe.
Other Roles Reminders for deviation like reminding about things
when grocery shopping or important meeting reminders.
More time & attention to family-
people get a feeling of control over their lives
it helps manage time, schedules & thus maintain individual identities & relationships
Parenting activities in free time
Peace & connectedness
Provides functional support to cope with potential breakdown
Provides emotional support to be relieved from fear of breakdown
SUMMARY
Electric Energy Management in the Smart Home
Focuses on the Technology.
Smart Home=well-designed structure with access to
assets, communication, controls, data & information
technologies for enhancing occupants’ quality of life
through comfort, convenience, reduced costs &
increased connectivity.
Cell phones, Broadband internet connections, TV
services, entertainment applications and hybrid
vehicles.
Smart Home Roles
Two-way communication with utility grid-
Smart Meter receives signals from service
provider & responds with information on
usage & diagnostics.
Economic feasibility- monetary saving
occurs because of electricity management &
also increases reliability of service of
equipments.
Thermal loads like air conditioner, room
heaters & water heaters can be controlled by
“intelligent” thermostats which can
automatically learn from user behavior
patterns & adapts room temperature
according to arrival & departure time of
users.
Household load controllers can learn load
levels from devices & manage loads of
devices.
