Why Rate Buildings ?

Buildings consume:1. 40% Energy.....2. 42% Water.......3. 50% Raw materials …

(TERI Griha Manual Vol.1)

Building Activity contributes to :1. 50% Air Pollution......2. 42% Green House Gas....3. 50% Water Pollution......4. 48% Solid Waste Generated....5. 50% CFC.....

We Architects and Engineers

Seem like some “Villains”.... :(Following “Ratings” will make us less of so.. :):)

Ratings – evaluation Tool for Ecological Perfomance through Life Cycle of a Building..

Ratings- What do they do?

1. Look at various parameters ofa)Design....b) Construction...c) Operation 2.Criterion with assigned Points3.A project gets points...points add up...4.Voluntary in nature...

Some other rating systems:

BREEAM:Building Establishments Environmental Assessment Method.

One of the earliest developed in 1990 in UK.

CASBEE: Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environment Efficiency.

Developed in Japan 2001.

GB Tools: Green Building Tools developed by International Framework committee of 25 countries . Developed in 1998 and constantly updated

HK BEAM: Developed in1996 in Hong Kong

LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design developed in US 1998.

GRIHA

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment.Developed by TERI and endorsed by MNRE.

Salient points

GRIHA has been developed for the different agro-climatic Zones of India.

Developed particularly for non-ac spaces or partially ac building.

Evaluators are experts from different fields connected to the buildings and are from specific region where the building is situated

Stresses on optimization of visual and thermal indoor comfort.

Integrates all relevant Indian Codes and Standards to act as tools for implementation

Emphasis:

Minimise --resource consumption-waste generation-overall ecological impact By Five R philosophy--Refuse-Reduce-Reuse-Recycle-Reinvent.

Broad categories: Site selection and Planning Building Planning and Construction Building Operation and Maintenance Innovation(34 Criteria---for this presentation 19 criteria

taken up)

Criterion 2: Preserve existing Vegetaion/or plant as per

Griha (1 point)Proper timing of Construction w.r.t. Rains

(optional clause no points) Confine Const. Activity (1 point) Erosion and sedimentation control (1 pt.)Preserve topsoil (1 point)TOTAL 4 POINTS.....

Criterion 3:Soil Conservation:Very important oft overlooked. It takes 100 years for 25 mm of soil to form (Griha manual:Vol 2)

In India we have different types of soil, identify them, study fertility, pH,saline levls.,

Store it at site...Avoid carting fertile soil from elsewhere..

Check this site : http://ceds.org/esp.html gives vary comprehensively cost incurred when soil is left un-conserved.

Involve Landscape Architect from the beginning of the design as well as all the time during construction.

Total Points -2

Criterion 8:Health and Well being.Follow NBC guideline 2005 for safety/sanitation.Maintain Machinery..Signages at appropriate locations.Provide Safety Equipemnts, fire extinguishres..Light for Night work..Double earthing for Hand tools.(Point 1) ...oodles of social points...

Criterion 9:.Control Air Pollution during Construction.Clear minimal vegetation where needed..Provide hoarding around..Veg/Mulch where vehicles do not ply..Limit Vehicle movement-speed to10km/hr..Hard pave vehicle circulation path..Cover/ Enclose all loose materials, dusty loads.(Points 2)..oodles of economic points...

Criterion 12

.Slag cement uses 1-10% less water.(Griha manual Vol.4)

.Employ Moist Curing better still Membrane Curing..

.Use Superplaticizers

.Use Precast construction Technology.

.Partitions of Dry walling.

(Points 1)...oodles of ecological points...

Criterion 15

Speaks mainly on---- Utilization of Fly Ash in construction andUse of Pozzolana Cement

(Points 6)

Criterion 16

.Low Embodied Energy Materials and Methods.

.Pre-stressing/Pre- casting.

.Rat Trap brickwork/ Jali brickwork.

.Stabilized Mud Block To name a few....

(Points 4)...oodles of Ecological points...

Plaster EE1.8(MJ/Kg)

Paint EE67.5(MJ/Kg) CSEB EE 0.275(MJ/Kg)

Brick wall Mud wall.

Criterion 17:

Use of Low energy materials in Interiors.Though a subject closer to design still Project

Manager are important players..Renewable..Use waste products.Use of waste as raw material in different

stages..Durable/Low-maintenance.Products which generate min. waste during

production(Points:4)

Built in furniture

Criterion 20:

Decide on the suitable Waste Water Treatment systems.

.Many new ecological systems available:1.DEWATS2.SBT. 3.Use of Additives like Bio-sanitizers and EMResponsibility is to carry out regular wastewater

treatment testing.(Points 2)

DEWATS

Soil Bio Technology (SBT)

Criterion 21

Water Recycle and Reuse:Rainwater Harvesting is its key requirement..Need inputs on Rainfall patern..Soil type..Level of underground water..Pollution field..Per capita need/ Production need..Dual Plumbing

(Points 2)...oodles of ecological/economical points

through6” PVC Pipe in to The open well.

Road Drain Water Diverting

Water is collected In the open well &Same will be allowed to percolates through the ground

During Rain,Water flowThrough theValley, will beCollected inThe open well

Check Dam ConstructedTo check theRain water& allow theWater to Percolate intoThe groundTo increase The Ground Water Table.

Criterion 22:

Waste Management:.Waste reduction during construction:.Safe disposal of waste within the site—

achieve/strive for zero debris.Waste prevention strategy:.Std. Dimensions..Consider using used bldg.materials

(Points1)...oodles of eco logical/economical points

Criterion 23:

Waste Segregation:.Though a use parameter--This should be attempted as part of the design

as well as project management.

(Points1)...oodles of eco logical/economical points

Criterion 24:

Storage and Disposal of waste:

Allocate a separate space where disposal of collected waste can happen safely

(Points1)...oodles of eco logical/economical points

Criterion 25:

Resource recovery from waste:

.Waste can be fuel

.Waste can be manure

(Points1)...oodles of eco logical/economical points

Criterion 26:

Use low VOC Paints-Strive for

No Paints No sealants

(Points 3)

Criterion 27

MinimizeOzone depletingSubstances:Live with Solar Cycle. In the design Introduce courtyards

(Point 1)

Criterion 28

Ensure Water quality asper Indian Standards..Work with water optimization plan..Provide water quality results before and after

treatment..Check quality frequently.

(Points 2)

Criterion 29

Acceptable outdoor and indoor noise levels..Work with Noise reduction/sound transferrability

coefficients and decide on materials .Strategies outdoor noise control..Reduced use of noise creating equipments

during construction

(Points 2)

Criterion 30:

Non Smoking Policy

(Point 1)

Criterion 31:

Universal design

Criterion 32/33:
