•MIT graduates and faculty had founded 4,000 companies, employing 1.1 million people (1:150 US jobs) and generating $232 billion in worldwide sales.

•The 24th-largest economy in the world, somewhere between South Africa and Thailand.

•About 150 new MIT-related companies are founded each year (Business Week).

Stanford & Silicon Valley

•A key resource: Stanford, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, SF and San Jose universities.

•Stanford is the leading institution for technology business creation.

•2000 firms were founded by Stanford alumni

•3000 (mostly small) companies in Silicon Valley, 85% (<100 employees); 70% (<10 employees)
