DAILY SCRUM
Deepak T Gururaja
The Purpose
What is a Daily Standup?
Scrum is team not only individuals Each individual comes to the scrum call
with the knowledge of Where I Stand At the end of the scrum, team walks out
with a knowledge of “Where WE Are”
Administrative aspects
All team members present Held at the same time/same place
everyday Facilitated by the Scrum Master Preferable to do it at the start of the day Time box – 15 minutes Preferred mode of communication –
face to face
The chicken and pig storyChicken: "Let's start a restaurant."Pig: "Good idea, but what should we call it?"Chicken: "How about 'Ham and Eggs'"Pig: "No thanks. I'd be committed, you'd only be involved."
Daily StandUp
Both pigs and chickens can participate Participation is mandatory for committed
members Members who are committed are
allowed to talk People who are involved are allowed
only to listen
The structure
All team members are required to answer 3 questions – What did I do today – To help my team
achieve the sprint goalWhat will I do tomorrow – To help my team
achieve the sprint goalDo I see any impediments in my team
achieving the sprint goal Anything else?
What about these
Getting inputs from other team members If I have to get the code debugged or a
solve a problem I need to get answers to queries I think one of the team members are
headed in the wrong direction. I need to correct him
I have to demo something I completed yesterday
I have to discuss these in the daily scrum.
These are important items
Please regroup after the scrum
Do your updates sound like this on most days?
What's Wrong?
Stuck on the same task for long without being blocked
Not “REALLY” making progress Doing spike task and not sure of the
outcome, or, even if there will be one In most cases, have no clue on what is
the way forward
What is the solution
Clear Smaller tasks Tasks that can be completed in a day Each such task should have a clear
outcome If a day’s task isn't completed in 2 day,
you are very unlikely to finish it the third day
Call out – we are a team
