COLOR

HUEthe place of the color within the color spectrum

Sir Isaac newton discovered that a prism separates light into a spectrum of colors, red, blue, violet, indigo, etc.

VALUEa color’s intrinsic lightness or darkness.

SHADEwhen black is added to a hue.

If I add black to a hue the value becomes darker, but the hue remains the same, above are shades of red.

TINTa hue that has been altered by adding white.

Below are tints of red.

SATURATIONthe relative purity color as it neutralizes to gray

HUE RELATIONSHIPSCOMPLEMENTARYwhen two colors are opposite eachother on the color wheel

ANALAGOUSwhen colors are side-by-side on the color wheel.

TRIADICalso called “split complementary,” these colors are at 120 degree intervals on the color wheel. One color compliments two colors that are the same distancefrom it’s true compiment.

MONOCHROMATICa group of colors that share the same hue but can be different values i.e. tints or shades
