Buckingham Palace is the London home and primary residence of the British monarch

Originally known as Buckingham House, the building was built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1705 .

The Queen's Gallery was built on the site and opened to the public in 1962 to exhibit works of art from the Royal

State Rooms

Buckingham Palace finally became the principal royal residence in 1837, on the accession of Queen Victoria.

The Ballroom is the largest room at Buckingham Palace. It was added by Queen Victoria and is used for ceremonies such as

investitures and state banquets. This picture dates from 1856.

Court Dress

Men not wearing military uniform would wear knee breeches of an 18th-century design

Women

Women's evening dress included obligatory trains and tiaras or feathers in their hair (or both).

Today, there is no official dress code

If the occasion is "white tie" then women, if they possess one, wear a tiara.
