Are you sure you're any good at this? Assessing Agile proficiency with the Agile Fluency Model

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

My presentation from LAST conference 2014: http://lanyrd.com/2014/lastconf/ ---- I've recently tried introducing the Agile Fluency Model (http://martinfowler.com/articles/agileFluency.html) to help communicate and assess what it means to be proficient in Agile. This model was published 2 years ago but most people still don't seem to have heard of it. I'd like to share what the Agile Fluency Model is, my interpretations of how to use it, and my experience of applying it.

Assessing Agile proficiency with the Agile Fluency model

Who has tried to learn a second language?

How can we tell whether someone is fluent in a language?

How can we tell whether a team or organisation is fluent in Agile?

Not just “can put together a few sentences”, but fluent.

There are 4 types of “jobs” that we typically hire Agile to do

Create transparency and alignment

“We don’t know what you’re doing”

“Why are you doing that?”

Deliver reliably and more frequently

“This is too slow, too expensive, with poor quality.”

Build better products and services

“This is a product strategy session, we don’t need your input”

Build an organisation that systemically supports all of this

“This is a business strategy session, we don’t need your input”

All of these jobs exist simultaneously

This is NOT an order of execution but more an order of difficulty

Let’s try assessing your team

“One star teams create business value.”

● Do you regularly report progress from a business value perspective?○ That is, no instances of “I wonder what they’re

doing”○ NOTE: I’m assuming reporting honest, actual

progress and not made-up progress

“Two star teams deliver on the market cadence.”

● Do you ship reliable software at the pace of the market? That is, as fast as your market can absorb?

“Three star teams optimise their value.”

● Do you show your impact on concrete business metrics / KPIs?

“Four star teams contribute to optimising the system.”

● Do you show how your actions impact the overall organisation? That is, how it impacts organisational strategy?

Let’s discuss
