What exactly do we mean by situational awareness?

© Crown copyright 2013 Dstl

19 November 2014

Land perspective • Geography • Culture and customs • Social context • Key individuals • Atmosphere

Air perspective

• Rapidly evolving, hostile and 3D environment

• Sensor and information fusion

• Sensory overload (human and machine) is a real concern

Maritime perspective • Maintaining local operating

picture: – sensing, tracking – data fusion – persistent wide-area

surveillance

• Enabling for command and control

• Understanding intent is a key challenge

• Maritime environment

Connected and complex battle space

• Overlapping domains • Shared networks • Coalition operations • Managing security • Cyber threat

Technical challenge areas

• Sensors • Precision navigation and timing • Reduced GPS dependability • Persistent surveillance • Status of digital systems

© Crown copyright 2013 Dstl

19 November 2014

Sensors • Key themes:

– multi-functionality – high resolution / wide field of

view – processing closer to the sensor – distributed sensing (extending

the baseline) – exploitation of commercial-off-

the-shelf / dual use

Reduced GPS dependability

• Primary source for position, velocity and time information

• Used for navigation, targeting, guidance, search and rescue, synchronisation for communications systems

• Vulnerability to jamming – satellite power (10s Watts) at 11000 NM (received signal fW) – mW at close range can cause problem – GPS jammers are available to buy on internet!

19 November 2014

Aspiration for military GPS • We would like military capability such as:

– foundation-level resilience to jamming – known functionality in operational environments

• With commercial attributes of – low space and weight – lower power consumption – no encryption overhead – short procurement times

Precision navigation and timing

• Micro-electro-mechanical sensor technology

• Quantum II technologies • Challenges:

– synchronised sensing – navigation inside buildings – network synchronisation – platform time and frequency

transfer – geo-location / direction finding

Persistent surveillance

• Pattern-of-life analysis • Anomaly detection • Automatic information

extraction • Managing and exploiting ‘data

deluge’ • Bi-directional processing • Regulatory and cultural

acceptability

Status of digital systems • Digital system – software aspects of

a system and the information communication technology

• Learning the performance of digital systems

• Exploitation of Moore’s Law and sensor ubiquity

• Assurance / security / reliability
