DESCRIPTION

Annual WA State ITE Conference Program (2010). In 2009, the City of Bellevue adopted a long range pedestrian and bicycle plan that guides how city departments, other agencies, community organizations, and individuals will work together to make the city more walkable and bikeable. In this session we explore how Bellevue engaged its community and employed innovative technologies to document barriers and prioritize improvements where they are most needed. This initiative evolved out of a dynamic public involvement process including on-line surveys, focus groups, and conversations with residents in the field, at public meetings, and over the internet. It also relied heavily on the use of GIS for prioritizing pedestrian and bicycle construction projects. Finally, Bellevue is employing an extensive toolbox of complementary strategies aimed at enforcement, engineering, education, encouragement, and evaluation. Through these strategic transportation initiatives, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations are being implemented that enhance quality of life and health, strengthen communities, increase safety for all modes of transportation, reduce congestion, offer recreational benefits, and benefit the environment.
