SESSION 13

I. ACCEPTANCE, 1-2

II. ACCOMMODATION,

13-23

Point 7.

• Rom 13:8 is not a prohibition against borrowing; it is an exhortation to make your payments on time.

Point 8.

• When we practice love, there’s no other need for laws.

In Light of the Lord’s Return

• Wake up! 11, 1 Thes 5:1-11; Matt 25:1-13

• Clean up! 12, 1 John 2:28-3:3• Grow up! 14, Eph 4:24; Col

3:10-14

Shining the Light through the Night

1. Separation, Eph 5:11

2. Information, 2 Cor 6:7

3. Position, Eph 6:13

4. Illumination, Matt 13:43

Defn.:

• Wantonness and jealousy are desires and attitudes; chambering and strife are the resulting actions from those desires.

Point 9.

• The armor of light is provided in order to empower you against what is prohibited.

How to Match Standing and State

1. Be created in righteousness (saved), Eph 4:24

2. Renew your mind with knowledge (grow), Col 3:10

Point 10.

• We have a positional righteousness called justification, but we live to produce a practical righteousness called sanctification, on the way to a perfected righteousness in glorification.

Thesis:

• One believer does not have the right to force his preferences on another.

Point 1.

• We are created equal in Christ, but our growth is somewhat conditioned upon environment and training and culture.

Point 2.

• The real mistake we make is if we set out on a crusade to control the other person.

Definition:

• The weak Christian is one whose conscience is overly sensitive because of lack of instruction in the word of God.

Definition:

• The difference between an opinion and a conviction is shown by the fact that preferences are built on inferences, and not directly what the Bible states.

POINT 3.

• Infer all you want to from what you believe the Holy Spirit is speaking to you, but do not put what you infer as a matter of your conscience on anyone else but you.

definition:

• The brother with a weak conscience is free, but he does not feel free in his conscience to exercise the liberty he has been given in Christ.

Point 4.

• If the Bible does not condemn others then you cannot use your conscience as a basis for condemning them, but on the other hand, your conscience condemning you cannot be used as a basis for the strong brother or sister rejecting you, or even as a basis for them offending you.

DEALING WITH CHRISTIAN TABOOS

1. It's a preference thing, not a principle thing

2. You are not better off in a Biblical sense for partaking or not taking part

Point 5.

• In the areas of conscience, you are only allowed to judge yourself.

Rules that Preserve Harmony in Diversity

1. The rule of personal liberty (diet): refrain from lording, 3-4

Point 6.

• Give freedom to other Christians to be different than you, and even weaker than you.

Point 7.

• Legalism always breeds carnality.

Definition:

• Legalism teaches that you find acceptance before God by what you don't do.

Rules that Preserve Harmony in Diversity

1. The rule of personal liberty (diet): refrain from lording, 3-4

2. The rule of public responsibility (days): recognize lord, 5-6

Point 8.

• Christians gather on the first day of the week to do three specific things (communion, communication and collection), because Christians from the earliest possible times have historically done so.

Point 9.

• In the area of preferences, whatever is done unto the Lord is acceptable.

Rules that Preserve Harmony in Diversity

1. The rule of personal liberty (diet): refrain from lording, 3-4

2. The rule of public responsibility (days): recognize lord, 5-6

3. The rule of cultural sensitivity (unity now): remember lifestyle, 7-8

DEFINITION:

• The world system is something Satan set up to deflect men's hearts from finding God, but culture is something that God created as a mechanism for getting the gospel to different races and different mindsets of people.

POINT 10.

• When you are confident you are doing what the Lord wants, you will be at rest and have the peace that comes from being secure in Christ.

Rules that Preserve Harmony in Diversity

2. The rule of public responsibility (days): recognize lord, 5-6

3. The rule of cultural sensitivity (unity now): remember lifestyle, 7-8

4. The reminder of personal accountability (unity later): realize liability, 9-12

Point 11.

• Salvation does not ensure sanctification, and the works that we complete after salvation show our heart.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:13• Did your wood turn to gold, a type

of your worship and glory to God?• Did your hay turn to silver, a type

of redemption and evangelism of others?

• Did your stubble turn to precious stones, a type of character produced through endurance of pressure?

Point 12.

• Edification precedes personal piousness.

Definition:

• Weak in conscience means they were offended by what you did; weak in faith means they might give up their Christianity based on what they see you do.

TWO LIMITS TO FREEDOM

1. Freedom and self welfare, 1 Cor 6:12

2. Freedom and your brother's welfare, 1 Cor 10:23

Point 13.

• Use two things: discernment and maturity—if you perceive it to be wrong, then don't do it (that’s discernment), and be generous toward those who do (that’s maturity).

Point 14.

• Righteousness is found in Christ, peace is found with God, and joy is given by the Holy Ghost, and those three things define the boundary lines of the spiritual kingdom of God on this earth.

Point 15.

• The things that really count are the things that bring harmony to the family.

Point 16.

• You can be used by God to inform them, but you have to leave room for the Holy Spirit to persuade them.

Point 17.

• Exercise your liberty in privacy if it's going to cause conflict or hinder ministry.

DAMNATION

1. There is the damnation of Mark 16:16, which is eternal destruction in the Lake of Fire

2. There is damnation for the Christian, which means to condemn or censure, 1 Cor 11:29

POINT 18.

• It is more important for you to walk by faith than for you to be strong.

GLEANING THE GUIDELINES

1. Consider public responsibility to others (14:7)

2. Consider personal accountability to Christ (14:10)

3. Consider the impression given (14:16)

4. Consider the influence on other Christians (14:19)

5. Consider what is said in the word of God (14:23)
