Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.

Mark 15:2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”

Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”

“Yes, it is as you say!”

Pilate before Jesus

John 18:33-35 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”

Pilate before Jesus

John 18:36-37a Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?”

Pilate before Jesus

John 18:37b-38 Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

Pilate before Jesus

Much of the communication process is non-verbal!

What is truth?

Pilate before Jesus

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

Pilate before Jesus

John 18:38b After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.”

Mark 15:3-5 And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

Mark 15:6-8 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.

Barabbas

Willing to die to provide His people spiritual freedom

Mark 15:9-10 And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.

Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.

Matthew 27:19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”

Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:12-13 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”

Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:14-15 And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Pilate before Jesus

John 19:12 “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”

Mark 15:16-18 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Pilate before Jesus

Mark 15:19-20 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Pilate before Jesus

Even when evil appears to have the “upper hand,” always remember that

GOD IS IN CONTROL!

In what is arguably Christ’s darkest hour, God never lost control of the

situation. All that was unfolding was part of God’s all-encompassing

sovereign plan!

Today’s Takeaway

Psalm 22:6-7a But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me.

Today’s Takeaway

Mark 10:33-34 See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”

Today’s Takeaway

Acts 2:23 This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

Today’s Takeaway

Even when evil appears to have the “upper hand,” always remember that

GOD IS IN CONTROL!

God has a plan for YOU and is working that plan!

Today’s Takeaway

Ephesians 1:11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will.

Today’s Takeaway

Hallelujah! What a Savior!

He faced God’s wrath so that we would never have to!
