Is Church still

relevant?

(Acts 2:1-47)

Introduction.

Purposes of the Church

•To glorify God

•To give corporate thanks

and praise to God

•To equip and edify the

saints

•To help us become holy

•To make disciples in the

world

1. The church is

relevant because it is

the community of

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus is the one who

created the CHURCH.

He is the HEAD

of the church

He gave it a MISSION.

2. The church is

relevant because it is

the community of the

HOLY SPIRIT.

The church’s mission

did not START until

Jesus sent the Holy

Spirit

The Holy Spirit is

Jesus’ GIFT to the

church.

He brings SPIRITUAL

gifts and power.

3. The church is

relevant because it is

a MISSIONAL

community

When the Holy Spirit

came, the church

began to GROW.

The church reached

out to ALL cultures

and languages

The church is the

beginning of God’s

new SOCIETY.

Every church is

engaged in a MISSION.

4. The church is

relevant because it is

a REDEMPTIVE

community

When the first sermon

was preached, 3,000

people were ADDED to

the church.

The church is the

community of the

SAVED.

The church is a

community that

demonstrates God’s

LOVE.

5. The church is

relevant because it is

a LEARNING

community

EDUCATION is an

essential ministry!

Due to the necessity

of having our minds

RENEWED.

Due to Bible

ILLITERACY and a loss

of Christian MIND and

character.

6. The church is

relevant because it is

a WORSHIPING

community

They worshiped

together and PRAYED

together

Worship remains a

CENTRAL focus.

We should move

beyond ATTENDING

worship to actually

worshiping!

7. The church is

relevant because it is

a HEAVENLY

community

Death does not END

our membership in the

Church of Jesus

Christ.

For now, we only see

the VISIBLE church;

The church on earth is

the church MILITANT;

the church in heaven

is the church

TRIUMPHANT.

In heaven, the

heavenly community

will worship for

ETERNITY.
