Why are they called Conic Sections?

• If we have a cone as shown below and we use a rectangular plane to slice it when it is:

a. Perpendicular to the Y-Axis

b. Tiltedc. The plane is parallel to

one of the sidesd. When the plane is tilted

in such a way that it also slices the upper part of the cone

• When viewed from the top the resulting shapes would be a circle ellipse, parabola and hyperbola respectively

• General Formula : x^2+y^2 = r^2• A circle is the set of points in a plane

that are equidistant from a given point .

• If the circle is shifted, equate the x and y components to 0 to find the new center of the circle then solve for the radius
