PUMC Goal Areas
The following five goal areas and subtending goals were developed by the Church Council between January and March of 2009. All Church Council members were invited to provide input to the prioritization process. These results were reviewed and agreed to at the Church Council/Committee Planning Retreat held on Saturday, March 28.
In addition to the goals, all input received during the goal review and prioritization process is included.

Set a time period, six weeks or so. Mix generations. How about a cook for good health group to accommodate all of us who need to eat more healthfully?

Minister to develop vital programs for children and
youth that complement our excellent church school program and are sensitive to the lifestyles of today’s youth and families
Offer “Spanish as a Second Language” classes to increase our ability to reach out to the Latino population. Include members of the Spanish-language Sunday School class to help teach.
Discern the needs of adult education [related to nurturing] and seek to meet those needs
Provide/sponsor education which is open to the community Teacher support – workshops, training for new teachers, “days off,” fellowship/spiritual
opportunities Make better use of all church facilities, especially the new youth room (12 votes for
“finish the Youth Room”)

PUMC GoalsAt the Church Council Planning Retreat, we divided into five small
groups, each group focusing on one of the five goal areas. These small groups were formed as follows:
Goal: Reaching People Through Membership, Membership and Growth Committees
Goal: Reaching People Through Worship, Worship Committee Goal: Nurturing People in our Congregation, Trustees Goal: Teaching God’s People, Education and Youth Goal: Serving God’s People, Outreach CommitteeThe small groups began to develop specific objectives and action
plans to tackle the goals within each Goal Area. Work will continue at the Committee and Church Council levels throughout the remainder of this calendar year. The work completed at the Church Council Retreat by each small group follows.

PUMC 2009 Goal Worksheet: Membership
SMART Objectives:1. Establish a database to allow PUMC
to track who is active in the life of the church. Include tracking those who participate in worship. Also capture those who participate in other church-related activities, e.g. adult education, youth activities, Church School, etc.
2. Determine whether Fellowship Friends program should be extended to those who fall somewhere between first time visitors and those who have made the commitment to become members of PUMC.

PUMC 2009 Goal Worksheet: Growth
SMART Objectives:1. Establish a robust Sunday morning greeter
program in order to create a welcoming atmosphere for first-time (as well as repeat) visitors to PUMC. The Sunday morning greeter program will also provide a vehicle for gathering information about our visitors. Possibly have greeter program involve
establishment of “Visitors Table” in Sanford Davis Room.
2. Establish pew pads (aka Ritual of Friendship) and sign-in sheets for the various adult education and other Church School morning activities). This will provide information for the database (Membership Objective) and visitor follow-up program.
3. Work with PUMC staff to develop a stronger follow-up program for communicating with visitors – more than PUMC’s current practice of sending visitors a one-time note and brochure.
