Hope in the Cross

1 Corinthians 1:21-23

“For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through

wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs

and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling

block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and

Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

The Folly of the Cross

• The people expected an earthly kingdom:– Daniel 2:44– Isaiah 9:6,7– Zechariah 9:9

The Beginning – John 1:1-3

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and

the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All

things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

Jesus made the tree that would grow the tree that would become his cross!

The Boy Jesus

• Our knowledge of the boy Jesus comes from Luke 2:41-52.

• Did he read Deuteronomy 21:23?

• Did he read Psalm 22:1?• Did he read Isaiah 53?

The Shadow of the Passover

• Jesus knew of the Passover. (Luke 22:8)

• He knew of the first Passover. (Exodus 12:1-32)– He knew of the Passover lamb.

(John 1:29)

• He knew of the scapegoat of Leviticus 16.

The Shadow of the Cross

• He lived the cross. (Luke 23:26-49)

• He endured the cross. (Hebrews 12:2)

• He conquered the cross. (1 Corinthians 15:57)
