United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
United Kingdom
United Kingdom, island country located off the northwestern
coast of mainland Europe. The United Kingdom comprises the
whole of the island of Great Britain—which contains England,
Wales, and Scotland—as well as the northern portion of the
island of Ireland. The name Britain is sometimes used to refer to
the United Kingdom as a whole. The capital is London, which is
among the world’s leading commercial, financial, and cultural
centres. Other major cities include Birmingham, Liverpool, and
Manchester in England, Belfast and Londonderry in Northern
Ireland, Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, and Swansea and
Cardiff in Wales.
Flag and symbol
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was
established on 1 January 1801 under the terms of the Acts
of Union 1800, by which the nominally separate kingdoms of
Great Britain and Ireland were united. In 1922, twenty-six of
thirty-two counties of Ireland seceded to form the Irish Free
State (later becoming the Republic of Ireland) and, to reflect
the change in the United Kingdom's boundaries, the Royal
and Parliamentary Titles Act 1927 formally amended the
name of the UK Parliament to the "Parliame
nt of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland".
