Promotional

• Andrew Goodwin's theory suggests that the music video is a promotional tool.

It promotes the:

• Person

• Products

• Movie

Person

• Umbrella promotes Rihanna as an artist as she was relatively new when she made the video, so we saw many shots of Rihanna which could be seen as promoting her.

Product

• This an a example of Andrew Goodwin’s theory where the video is used for promotional purposes. The dancer in blurred lines promoting Dr dre’s beats pills which was quite new and needed promoting.

Movie

• In the song happy it promotes the movie despicable me two because we can see the minion from movie despicable me 2.

The Opposing theory

Artistic

• The other theory suggests that music videos are made to be artistic.

• This theory says that music videos purpose is for:

• Entertainment

• Tell a story

Entertain

• An example for a music video which sole purpose is to entertain is the Michael Jackson video thriller. A lot of effort went into the video to make it entertaining.

Tell a story

• A music story that tells a story is the song Stan by Eminem this shows the story of an obsessed fan eventually committing suicide.

Evaluation

Andrew Goodwin's theory is correct and makes a good point that music videos are for promotional purposes because as we can see that many music videos with or without knowing promote the person, band or product. Although many music videos are entertaining and can be classed as artistic. In conclusion most videos have a mix of Andrew Goodwin's theory and the opposing theory but some sway to one way or the other.
