Overview

• What is Business Continuity• Why is it important?• Types of Business Continuity• Advantages and Challenges of the 3 types of

Business Continuity Tools• Questions

What is Business Continuity?

• A tool to stay “connected” to the “outside world” when the primary connection fails

• Today’s business is “tied” to the outside world with the dependence on:• “Cloud” based services (access to critical data,

inventory availability order processing, etc.)• Processing of credit and debit card transactions• Access to reservation information (hospitality)

Why is Business Continuity Important to you as a Systems Provider?

• It enhances your role in the partnership with your customer

• It enhances your credibility when designing a systems solution that insures minimizing problems that can disrupt the “flow” of your customer’s business operation

Types of Disasters that can disrupt a business:

• Hurricane

• Flood/Rain

• Tornado

• Fire

• Earthquake

Types of Disasters that we don’t think about that can disrupt a business:

• Wireline (fiber) being cut

• Cell Site Failure

• Power Failure

• Utility poles/lines being damaged

3 Types of Business Continuity

• Wireline: Connection that is typically the same as a business's primary means of connectivity

• Cellular: A cellular data connection using an “air card” or other cellular data product

• Satellite (VSAT): A data connection using a satellite modem and antenna to send and receive data

Business Continuity: Wireline

• Advantages:• Connectivity is very similar to primary

broadband connection (via local exchange carrier, cable, etc.)

• Pricing and provisioning is very similar to primary connection

• Easy to accommodate within existing IT infrastructure

Business Continuity: Wireline

• Challenges:• To insure true Business Continuity, the routing

path to the business location must be different from the primary (path diversity)

• Selection of a secondary wireline provider• With wireline business continuity, it is

dangerous to use the same provider for primary and redundancy

Business Continuity: Cellular

• Advantages:• Easily available• Can be a lower priced alternative to wireline or

VSAT• Minimal Equipment (typically a router with an

aircard)

Business Continuity: Cellular

• Challenges:• Does IT Infrastructure support cellular?• Enterprise users compete with all other

(consumer) users for finite available bandwidth

Business Continuity: Satellite (VSAT)

• Advantages:• Can be located “anywhere”• Enterprise users do not compete with other

users• Most “path diverse” solution• Very competitively priced

Business Continuity: Satellite (VSAT)

• Challenges:• Higher initial equipment investment• Least “understood” Business Continuity solution
