Children of a Lesser God……. a new beginning
(Sep. 25-Oct 02, 2011)A humble effort by The Gurukul, Panchkula
www.thegurukul.in
You find them dime a dozenOn the streets everydayAnd how we loathe themAnd keep them from our children away
Not even a thought is sparedWhen we see little hands sloggingAt times as domestic helpsOr being ordered around for serving
Oh the children of a lesser GodTo poor parents you were bornNot by choice but defaultThen why do we treat you with such scorn?
Oh the children of a lesser GodYour smile and your innocenceIs no different from the fortunate onesThen where is your childhood, why its absence?
Oh the children of a lesser GodIt’s we who deserve the contemptFor failing in our duties towards youFor not even making an attempt
Oh the children of a lesser God……………….please forgive us!!

• Innocent childhood is lost in a pursuit of earning livelihood and also snatched is their basic right to education.
• Families cannot survive without their financial contribution.• Grow up as illiterate adults and unproductive units of society.• Leads to increased crime rate. • Hampers the country's growth and progress.

Can be ‘Changed’
• by creating awareness about the ill- effects of child labour. • by trying to convince people to not employ minors at home, shops or industries.

Students interacted with their parents, general
public and shopkeepe
rs and industrialists urging them to replace
underage employees with elder
ones.

Plan of Action
• Designed a questionaire• Identified the working children• Enrolment of these children in evening school for free of cost• Teaching money generating activities• ‘Street Play’ by school children and the child labourers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gmi1xCXywA)

In the selected week
• Questionnaire was developed to find out about child labour but the response was disheartening as the parents of child labourers refused to divulge any details.
• Therefore students identified children around their school involved in any kind of labour like domestic help, shoe –shiners, in dhabas, tea stalls, sweet shops, industries etc.
• They offered them to join their evening school since the families could not afford to send them in the mornings as their income was helping in families’ sustenance.
www.thegurukul.in
• Free books and stationery given to the children.• Some money generating activities like candle making, shagun- envelope making, paper bag making etc. were taught to the children.• They were also involved in recreational activities like dance.• A street play(Nai Subah) was put up by the school students and the evening school children together, in the local market to create awareness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gmi1xCXywA)
In the selected week

• The residents of the group housing societies around the school were contacted to buy the items (candles, shagun cards, paper bags etc.) made by these child labourers.
• The money generated thus would be used for buying uniform for their children.
• Students of the school pledged to help at least one not so privileged child at their home front (could be domestic help/maid's child/servant's or gardener's ward etc.) in access to education.
