Learn about eating ahealthy diet with Samas he eats his lunch!

One afternoon, Sam and his mom werehaving lunch.

Sam's mom served him his plate. On it was atuna fish sandwich, carrots, and an apple. Todrink, Sam got a carton of milk.

"No!" Sam said."I want pizzaand a sodainstead."

Pizza contains cheese, salt,

and/or fatty meat. Theseingredients can increase your

risk for heart disease.

"But Sam," his mom replied. "Don't you want to eat yoursandwich? You know, horses eat grain to make themstrong. Bread is made of grain."

You should eat whole wheat

bread because it has the

most fiber.

"I can eat like a horse," said Sam as he ate hisbread. "Chomp chomp."

Kids should eat four to six

servings of grain a day. Oneslice of bread is an example

of a serving.

"And did you know bears catchtuna with their paws?" Sam'smom said. "I bet you can't dothat with your tuna."

Lean meat, like chicken and

fish, is healthier than red

meat, like beef and pork.

"I can eat my tuna like a bear," said Sam. "Roar!"

Meat is a good source ofprotein, which builds muscles.

"Rabbits nibble on their carrotswith their teeth," said Sam'smom. "I wonder if you can dothat?"

Vegetables come in all

different colors - not justgreen. They all have different

nutrients that keep youhealthy.

"I can!" said Sam, nibbling his carrot.

Most vegetables arenaturally low in fat and

calories.

"Did you know that pigs likeapples?" asked Sam's mom.

Most fruits are portable,

which means you can takethem with you wherever yougo, and are low in calories.

"Not more than I do!"replied Sam, taking a biteout of his apple.

Bananas, cherries,strawberries, grapes,

oranges, peaches, andpears are some more

examples of fruits you caneat!

"What animal drinks milk?"asked Sam's mom.

Milk is a type of dairy product.Other dairy products you shouldeat are low fat yogurt and low

fat cheese.

"Hm…a kitten does!" saidSam. "And look I can slurp mymilk like a kitten!"

Drink 2 to 3 cups of milk a day.

"Good job!" said Sam'smom. "You finished your

lunch."

"I did!" said Sam in surprise. "Just like the animals finishtheirs."
