HIPPOCAMPUS& RECOGNITIONMEMORY

PRESENTATION BY RAGHAV MATTAY

BASED ON RESEARCH BY

Hippocampus

the center of emotion as well as integral part ofmemory and spatial navigation

The Question?

Which of the two processes of recognition memory -recollection and familiarity - does the hippocampussupport?

The Study

66 subjects

2 Tests:

participants shown a series ofwords, asked to recollect them

participants shown anotherseries of words (old & new),asked to decide whether or noteach word was one they wereshown before

Less high frequency when the participants failed to recognizea word they had been shown before, or whenever they saw anew word - whether or not they correctly identified it as new

ResultsNoticeably higher frequencies of activity when participantscorrectly identified a word they had seen before

"Our findings reject thehypothesis that the hippocampusexclusively supports therecollection component ofrecognition memory and, instead, indicate that this structure isfunctionally relevant to bothprocesses thought to supportrecognition."
