Respiratory System

Breathing In

• Also know as inhaling• Lesser carbon dioxide, lesser water vapor and

lesser heat• More oxygen• The ribs expand, the diaphragm moves

downwards, the chest expands

Breathing Out

• Also known as exhaling• More carbon dioxide, more water vapor and

more heat• Lesser oxygen• The ribs contract, the diaphragm moves

upwards, the chest contracts

Respiration

• Reaction in cells when oxygen and nutrients are used to produce carbon dioxide and energy

Parts of the Respiratory System

• Nose• Windpipe• Lungs• Air Sacs

Nose

• Allows air to enter and leave the body• Contains hair and mucus to trap the dust in

the air• Air that passes through is moistened and

warmed

Windpipe

• Transfer the air that the nose breathed in into the lungs

Lungs

• Contains air sacs• Allow exchange of gases • Pick up oxygen from inhaled air• Pass carbon dioxide into exhaled air

Air Sacs

• Richly supplied with blood vessels• Increases the surface area for exchange of

gases• Collects oxygen• Release carbon dioxide from the blood vessels

through the walls of the air sacs
