Introduction….Kargil is located 205 km from Srinagar.

This was the most recent ground war between any two nations after Sino-Soviet Border Conflict.

Over 500 Indian soldiers and around 600-4,000 Pakistani militants and soldiers are believed to have been killed in the war.

At the time of the Kargil war, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister of India.

Movies like JP Dutta's LOC: Kargil and Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya have been made on the Kargil conflict.

What led to the war???

• There have been two major wars, the 1965 war and the 1971 war before the Kargil War.

• The main cause of the war was over the control of Kashmir.

War progress

First, Pakistan infiltrated forces into the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir.

The next stage consisted of India discovering the infiltration and mobilizing forces to respond to it.

The final stage involved major battles by Indian and Pakistani forces.

During the winter season, Indian and Pakistan Armies reduce patrolling of areas that may be avenues of infiltration.

During February 1999, when weather

conditions were severe the Pakistan Army began to occupy some posts on the Indian side of the LOC.

Pakistan hoisted the Kashmir issue with the UN.

The Indian army launched its final attacks in the last week of July.

The fighting ceased on July 26 and has since been marked as Kargil Vijay Divas in India.

AFTER MATH OF KARGIL WAR

• Kashmir became the nuclear flash point and Kargil issue was made internationalized.

• India and Pakistan both came to know their potentials.

• Pakistan’s foreign policy was failed and the propagatory front was proved a total collapse
